1Gb CrossfireX with 2Gb?

Thread Starter
I was looking at getting another graphics card to crossfire. I currently have a Sapphire HD Radeon 5570 1Gb DDR3. I got this one originally because I was unsure of the space in the case I had on the way(Azza Fantom 900). After building it, I saw I have plenty of clearance to the side intake fan. When looking on the egg for another card, i noticed that Sapphire has brought out a 2gb version(larger in size as well). question I have is this, can I xfire these two cards or do i have to get the same card?

I can not answer your question (my past experience tells me it wont work)
but if I were in your place, I would have sold the 5570 and buy a new 5850 or gtx 460.

IIRC you can crossfire them but the 2gb card will only be able to use 1gb, so you would have 2gb total to use

You can but why would you want to?

a single 5770 will be better or a GTX 460
post #5 of 11
5570 1 GB + 5570 1 GB in CrossFire = 1 GB framebuffer
5570 1 GB + 5570 2 GB in CrossFire = 1 GB framebuffer

In Crossfire (and basically SLI), the framebuffer is only the size of the card with the lowest amount of memory.

OP wants to get 5570 CF.

Everyone else says to sell the 5570 and get a better single card because crossfiring a low end card like a 5570 is more troublesome.

OP, sell your 5570 and get a newer card like a GTX 460, 5850, or 6850.

Yes, save your money and get a better card.

To the OP, I have run a 5870 2gb withe a 5850 1gb card in CF no problem.
