Sandy Bridge overclocks only affects Turbo Boost?

Thread Starter
I remember reading that the overclocks on LGA 1155 only work when turbo boost is enabled and that the rest of the time it will be at stock clocks, is this true?

How long does turbo boost last for?

I assume it's like reverse speed step where it overclocks at load instead of underclock at idle?

Until you run out of nitro.

That is wrong. On P67 boards you can disable turbo and power saving features. That is assuming you have k processor on a P67 Mobo.

If you have a k processor on a non p67 mobo what you said is true. If you have a non k processor on a p67 mobo what you said is also true.

Yep that's it in a nutshell. Currently my 2600k build (siggy link) boots up at ~3400mhz stock, once OS loads and it's at idle it's at ~1650mhz, once I load up my folding client it's currently clocking at 4560Mhz.

I couldent get past stock clocks on it with turbo disabled on P8P67. I had to keep it on to get higher than stock multi's. Could be my board or bios revison because I thought it was going to work without it like you say..

Balla is correct I believe; since overclocking by the regular BCLK is much more difficult/impossible on SB, everything is really done by the multiplier.

And to answer your question about Turbo Boost, it's not something that "runs out," per se. As long as the chip is within design thermal/power limits, cores will automatically bump up multipliers based on how many cores are in use. It's dynamic and happens many times per second.

EDIT: Added a bit to the first line.

Assume I'm talking about a 2500K on P67.

So disabling Turbo Boost with above CPU and board results in constant overclocked speeds like 4.5Ghz 24/7?

I know they changed the way and circumstances of OCing, but I'm not sure of all the details.

Have you tried to update your bios?

I don't have mine yet, I'm going off the overclocking guide posted by another member in which he explains how it works with his board.

He stated on his Gigabyte board he could turn off power saving features and disable turbo mode causing the option of turbo settings to gray out.

2500k or 2600k atm.

Yes I believe that's how it works. That's what I've read anyways.

Atm I do not have a chip though so I may be wrong.

It basically renders all the cpu's in Intel's line up other than the two 'K' Versions useless!

Yeah, great move intel, cut your nose off to spite your face!

Useless to an overclocker, which the k chips are designed for...

You do know we're the minority right? I'm just glad they provided a k chip for only about $10 more than a locked one.

I don't really see the problem, or understand the hate. It's not like they're asking double/triple for the same chip just unlocked.
