Questions about folding... Utterly Clueless about folding..

Hey there folders!

Let me explain first before you go berserk on me 'read the stickies!' and all that.. I've read some of them, searched the forums for the answers i need, but some of the questions i have isnt listed nor posted...

Now for some explanations, I always, well if not always most of the time have my system on all the time, even when im at work, going out or whatever, I dont have a torrent running or anything, ** I buy my stuff hehe** I just.. have it on really.. and since i have it on anyway, i might as well help the community by folding...

I know its all about researching proteins and all that.. but thats about what all i know... I wont do it for the rankings or anything, or because its fun or whatever other reasons there is, As i've said, since i have my computer on, i might as well make it do something worthwhile... and the sense of contributing something to the community and helping research for cures will well.. make me feel better about myself ^_^

Now on with the questions...

1) What exactly do i need to start this?
2) Do I need a good system?
3) What about temps? Will it increase my CPU/GPU load to 100% whilst one is folding?
4) How will it affect my system's performance? While gaming/browsing and all that. * I've read somewhere that you can do everything else while folding.

*If somebody can enlighten me, would be really great ^_^
with all these lingo's, like WU's and -bigadv and all taht...

I prefer a straight answer from the community, i've read the official stuff about it, but its too professional so nothing stuck to my head >.>

Thanks for all the people that will help ^_^

1) You need to download the proper folding clients that can be found in this guide: http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...mp-client.html
2) No, basically any computer can fold, but the better the system, the more points you get.
3) You CPU load will be at 100% while folding on it, and your GPU will be at 100% if you choose to fold on it too.
4) You can set the folding priority to "low" so that everything else takes precedence over it. That means that it wont really affect the performance of the computer if you're trying to do something else on it (it will have a big impact on gaming though).

As for all of the folding "lingo" there is a very good explanation of it that can be found here: http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...ing-terms.html

1: To start this you need only to refer to the well written guides provided by some of our editors and other folders:

http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...l-threads.html

You'll be looking at the SMP client:

http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...mp-client.html

and the ATI guide GPU client:

http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...ing-guide.html

You can fold on one or both. Its completely up to you!

2. The better the equipment the more points you receive / projects you complete a day. You'll be able to get some decent points off your system and as its all going to help with some important scientific pursuits any contribution is significant!

3: Yes both CPU and GPU clients will push your hardware to 100% usage in most cases so you are encouraged to have good coolers and when its winter an open window

4: While you are folding (assuming you haven't configured the clients to run on low priority) its best to stick to low intensity programs like browsing, music etc. You will see an impact on programs that are CPU/GPU intensive while folding so when many of us are gaming we shut the clients off until we're done. Hence the incredible drop in PPD during Steam's Xmas sales. If you're running them on low priority you'll experience almost no impact.

Literally all you need is a PC, and http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...-win32-SMP.zip < this

For now, you might as well just fold on your CPU. The ATi client is very un-optimised at the moment, and is IMO not a great trade-off between extra power consumption, and work done.
Folding will indeed use 100% CPU time, but automatically throttle whenever anything else is going on. It never impacts on the performance of your PC, but uses all the spare cycles; as you're not doing it for the points, or the competition, this won't matter

Download that ^ above, unzip it somewhere, then come back and ask more questions
