overclocking a 970 - Page 2

I'm assuming enabling the "Vdroop" is a good thing, if it's anything like "Load Line Calibration" on Asus boards. That usually helps me on overclocks. Try lowering your RAM and CPU multipliers to almost the lowest and keeping the FSB the same. See if that's stable. If it's not stable, your motherboard is probably the bottleneck. If it is, try upping your ram and trying again. If both situations are stable, you probably need more Vcore or something else.

I managed to get my 970 running @ 4.2GHz (183*23) with 1.376 Vcore stably with 24hrs of Prime 95. I can get 4.4GHz, but the temperatures and vcore are too high for my liking (71-74*C)

I tried lowering my pll but had to put it back to stay stable. You can use up to x25 multi with the 970. I use 170x25 for 4260mhz, 1.3v, 1.25qpi, 1.8pll and get great temps with the venomous-X, amazing temps really.

My CPU PLL is 1.8 by default, are you suggesting that I lower the voltage?

Not that I would be surprised, lowering Vcore on Prescott Processors got way better overclocking results for me compared to raising Vcore.

I'm giving up on 4.0 right now. I dialed back to 3.9 and that looks like it may not be stable either.

Well I'm about as stable at 3.9 as I am at 4. so I may as well keep working on 4.

so using 23x174 (yep, those are cooler temps),
CPU Vcore 1.3
ICH Vcore 1.2
QPI PLL Vcore 1.35
IOH Vcore 1.25
CPU VTT 1.3

Didn't see your QPI link speed listed there either, you should turn that down along with your uncore if it's still on auto.

Found it down the bottom, it is on auto, turn that down to it's lowest numerical value along with the uncore. (I would bring the uncore up a few notches off the bottom once you have a stable OC you're happy with)
this. sounds like a qpi problem. try lowering uncore multi see what that does. if need increase the qpi voltage as well.

This is looking more like it, with uncore set to it's lowest setting this is the longest I've gone without a crash yet.

Not calling it stable, but it is at least promising.

I'll have to look into that too, it did lower temps a bit. Well, thanks for the tips guys, I'm still stability testing, but the Sat night beer drinking has started, and I don't drink and overclock....

I'm spending tomorrow at work away from my compy, so I'll try more monday. Hopefully I'll get my H70 soon. I doubt it will improve temps much, but it will have an effect.
