k then why doesn't he go the cheap route and get an x2 and unlock it? He's just getting a 6850 anyways so there is no way that his CPU will be the bottleneck even if he got an old Athlon in there

You are not 100% guaranteed on unlocking the extra cores, and if he doesn't, he's stuck with a rig that definitely will not last him 3 years. Is it really worth the risk?

getting 6 weak cores will in no way be called futureproofing.....just think of now and leave everything else...as games evolve so fast when the time comes that a game is actually coded to take advantage of 6 cores then the x6 would do nothing spectacular in terms of performance.....if u want absolute futureproofing wait for ivy bridge or bulldozer.....
and btw there is sufficient difference between an i5 and an x4 in games......although if the cost is too much for i5 when compared to the performance deleivered then x4 makes sense.......

Most games are ported off the current consoles, and the current PH2's are not "weak". i have owned a Core i7 920, Q9550, and a 1055T, and i can say that the 2x extra cores benifit in BC2, and also enable you to run things like FRAPS, and folding@home on 2 cores, while the games use 4.

It's not really a massive deal, both will do you well.

A good quad core is all you need for the next 2-3 years. Most games are made for console and pc are the same computer language.

by weak i meant instructions processed per clock is less for ph 2 architecture.....
and u talk about 6 cores i have seen bfbc2 use all 8 threads on my i7.....
just provide me the proof that the extra 2 cores actually benefits in bfbc2 and its better than i7 or i5....bcoz last i saw bfbc2 was running better on i5/i7 when compared to phenom 2 x6....

The only issue is he is on a budget, and the core i5 2xxx series and the core i7s are out of his reach. and the 24xx is meh.

ya thats why im not telling him to buy i5/i7
i was only saying that he shoud get an x4 955be and save some money coz x6 is in no way future proof for gaming..
how can u expect a 6 core proccy which is defeated by a 4 core proccy to be future proof........

EDIT:my triple 7 post......xD

i heard that phenom x4 955 has a loud cooler. is this true?
will it be louder than my old AMD Athlon 64 3000+ cooler?

yup its louder but u can set its speed manually if the temps are under control or u could save some money and go with either cooler master hyper tx3 or cm hyper 212+ if u dont plan on extreme overclocking......the latter of the 2 is better vfm....
