k then why doesn't he go the cheap route and get an x2 and unlock it? He's just getting a 6850 anyways so there is no way that his CPU will be the bottleneck even if he got an old Athlon in there
The multipliers are still locked, you can only push the base multipliers up to a certain multiplier (3.8GHz) before you can not push it any further. I think the most with one core is 4.1GHz, and with all 4 it is 3.8GHz... But these processors are known to hit an average of about 4.3GHz (topping off at 4.5-4.6), so why pay an average 9 percent less for 9-12% less performance?

you should always use a aftermarket cooler, the 212+ is very cheap and awesome

Get the X4 and save your money. Here in OCN we get new part in less then a year so the Core i7 vs PII argument is going on constantly. In 3 years both these CPU will be slow compare to newer CPUs. Also here we fight for the most fps but that does not mean better gaming experience. PII is a great overall CPU and will handle almost any games for another 2 years no problem. You know its time to upgrade when Quad Core is no more the mainstream CPU like its now.
