Athlon II X3 445 temp advice...

Thread Starter
I picked up an Athlon II X3 445 right after X-mas and I just stuck it into my tower.
I knew they run hot, but I didn't expect 55C Idle temps with the stock cooler.
I tried re-seating it several times but it looks like 55C is my idle temp with that cooler no matter what.
Ive got a Phenom II 965 cooler sitting on it right now and It still Idles at 50C. During BFBCII I hover at 62-63C.
Now, I realize that thats hot, but is it too hot? Will I damage my processor running at that temp for long periods of time?
I would love to unlock this thing and OC it if possible, but im right on the threshold of my Temperature comfort zone right now.
So, Is it defective? Or should I invest in a good cooler for it?

EDIT: I know that my thermal paste has a "Burn In" time, and Im starting to see 49C at near idle now but im still not happy with my temps. Usually a stock cooler is at least competent.

You should invest in a better cooler. I have an Athlon x3 440 and it idles at 30*C and loads at 40*C on a low end cooler (CoolerMaster TX3). However, I wouldn't really recommend that cooler as its quality is rather low. Also, the max temp listed by AMD for the Athlon 440 is 73*C. Assuming the 445 is the same then you are safe under that stock cooler, but I wouldn't try to unlock it or overclock it too much.

Where did you hear that the Athlon II series CPU's ran hot?
My experience with these CPUs are low temperatures. For example, I also had an Athlon x2 250 and it idled at 26*C and loaded at 34*C under the same cooler along with 2 120mm case fans.

Sorry, I should clarify, I heard from several friends and my own experience with Athlon II X3 processors that they run hot. Athlon II Dual cores run REALLY cool.
I had a 255 for a while and had it at 3.5 on the stock cooler at 54C.

How is your airflow? Do you have any case fans? Also, how does your stock cooler look like - is it the one with heatpipes or the new coolers they ship out with the Athlon II series? Also, how are your ambient temps?

Hmm you have some interesting temperatures under the stock cooler. I've also had this 440 under the stock cooler and even then temperatures were fairly decent: Idled at 38*C and Loaded at 49*C.

Ive got a 200mm fan on the side doing intake, a 120mm on the back for exhaust and the Phenom II Cooler with heat-pipes. Im going to be putting a 120mm on the top for exhaust and on the front for intake as well within the next few days.

But yes, my temps do seem VERY high. Even after re-seating and applying good thermal paste. I am inclined to think that its defective.

I haven't worked with one of the 3 core athlon IIs since before the new Heatsinks came out, so my experience has been they they run hot with stock cooling.

The Phenom heatpipe cooler should perform better than the new ones they ship out with the Athlons.

I see that you live in AZ, how are your room temps? Also, I wouldn't immediately say it is defective. Maybe your motherboard's sensor(s) could be faulty? Do you have any way to manually check the temperatures?

What is the difference between yours and mine? I'm assuming that it is just FSB

That sounds really strange. I had an Athlon II X3 440 with stock speed and cooler and it would idle in the 30s. Something funky is going on; check the funky stuff.
