PSU for high end build

Thread Starter
My friend may be wanting to buy my current computer, thus I would be making numerous upgrades.

i7 930 cpu
P6X58D mobo
GSkill 6gb 1600mhz ram
ASUS Black DVD drive
HAF 932 case
Seagate Barracuda 1.5tb drive
EVGA Superclocked GTX 580 gpu

I will probably also have a H70 cooler with 150cfm aftermarket fans installed.

Anyways, I am wondering what PSUs are out there for around the 100-150 price range that could support this. I will probably OC the gpu as far as I can on air and the 930 to about 4-4.4ghz range [or whatever I can get].

What would fit that spec? It also would need to be modular haha. Thoughts?

A quality 550W would run that.

A 750W if you want to do SLI.

An 850W if you want to do SLI with massive overclocks.

I was thinking something along those lines. I guess it might be smart to get a psu of a higher wattage like the 750 or 850 in case I buy a second 580 later on.

What brands do you consider to be good as far as durability and performance?

I have only really had experience with Antec psu's and I am wondering if there is something out there that is more worth my money [i am assuming there is, but you never know].

I suggest that you get 6GB of RAM instead, since that will give you a triple-channel kit instead of the dual-channel one you've selected now and as far as I know the Samsung 1TB F3's are faster than the WD Blacks aswell.

Good catch on the dual/triple channel memory!

I will stick with the caviar black though. They are more reliable.

Going with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231247
for memory.

Yeah some people prefer WD over Samsung because the Samsung drives weren't too reliable in the past ( at least that was my experience ) but I decided to give them a second chance, and boy am I glad I did. But stick with WD if you want to.

Although you could wait a little while and see if you can get a sandy bridge rig for less and it'll be as good / better than this one.

Well I don't support blind brand recommendations, it all depends on a unit by unit basis.

The best ~550W available is the SeaSonic X560, should cost in the $100-$130 range.

The best ~750W available is the SeaSonic X750, X760, or Corsair AX750 (they're all basically the same thing). The X750 is currently $130 on Newegg, so is the best deal at the moment, but won't last.

The best ~850W available is a bit murkier since the SeaSonic X, SeaSonic M12D, and CWT DSG platforms are all pretty close in performance there. The units based on those platforms are the SeaSonic X850, Corsair AX850; SeaSonic M12D 850W, XFX BE 850W; and Corsair HX850 respectively.

Yeah....looking more at the 2600k i think I will just wait and sell this system to my friend later on. I should just watch of things develop with the sandy bridge.
