I think if anything is going to compete with the iPhone eventually it will be the Windows Phone. It's severally lacking in apps and some capabilities but it definitely has nailed down the polish.
I think if Android was not on so many devices on so many carriers it wouldn't be near as many ones out there. While I think it's a decent OS I think the iPhone and Windows Phone is much better. I think when the phones get a lot faster Android will probably catch up as the UI is written in Java. I'm a huge fan of Java(what I program at work) I think it's a terrible language(at least right now) in performance situations(like a UI). I find the UI laggy and slow compared to WP7 and iPhone and the overall feel to be clunky.
I think the keyboard needs major work as the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X and the Incredible(the only ones i've used extensively) have terrible software keyboards when the phone is not in landscape mode.
Personally next to the WP7 and iPhone, Android just kind of seems terrible. That's my opinion though. Then on most devices your stuck with the God awful 3rd party UI like Sense and Blur. All the high powered phones have this crap on them. I guess you have the Nexus S which looks like a really good phone. Is it so much to ask to get a vanilla experience.
HTC is the only OEM that I find, makes the kind of phones most people want. That's unibody thin designs. The problem is that sense is terrible. Now there trying to get that crap on WP7. I sure hope they don't succeed. No matter how bad sense is, blur is even worse. It's ok though because Motorola doesn't make any phones I've ever found that nice.
As much as I hate to get tied into Microsoft I think WP7 is finally a smart phone that I will buy. I def don't want to buy into the iPhone.Edited by dham - 1/8/11 at 8:44pm
