ESET NOD 32 smart security suite. awsome filewall and a great anti virus. its been around along time. and best of all it runs on VERY little system resources!

i also use Malwarebytes software. it does a great job of blocking IP addresses. specially if you are a torrent user...

Here is a good source of useful information on security software. If you're going to buy software, I would suggest NIS 2011, otherwise one of the free ones suggested here or in the link below.

LOL!, how antivirus can be mobo compatible???
On the free side, MSE, Comodo and Avira (Free Version) are the best

Some really great suggestions here

I'm almost just thinking of spending some cash on an antivirus program regardless.

If you were to go out and purchase an anti-virus program what is a good one to purchase?

AVG 9 Free.

I just use microsoft live security essentials. I freaking love it! It never bugs me, uses like no resources, and I have had exactly 0 virus/spyware or any other related issues since switching to it.

EDIT - its also free!

Avast 5 FREE hands down

take it from me, I have tried several types of AV - IS ( Kaspersky, Norton, Bitdefender, AVG, Avira) and have finally settled for Avast, which I found that it's the best out of the previous ones, though I don't say they are bad, they are good as well, but I see that Avast is the best.
I have been using it for about a year with no problem at all, no virus could find its way to my PC, neither I am annoyed of its performance, I can't even feel like an AV is installed, it is soooo light on my PC, and the latest version is even better and better.

just install it and customize it for silent mode ( if you want an "install it and forget it" AV).

good luck.
