Which card would you use for this task?

Thread Starter
I am trying to put together a HTPC for a friend, but the computer that I am working with only has AGP and PCI slots available. No PCIe of any kind. Just regular old PCI. The card doesn't need to be anything special at all. It just needs to have an HDMI output and be able to do the whole audio over HDMI thing. I am looking for a one cable solution. His TV's resolution is 1080p. So which card would you use? Am I leaving anything out here?

I take that back... if you want a cheaper card this is the way to go but it will not give as much performance. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161347

Sandy Bridge can do 1080p, but I doubt the MB you're working on is 1155.

Yeah we are talking about a Compaq from 2004 lol. Compaq Pretty-sorry-oh.

Yeah I am looking for the least expensive option. Will the suggested card/s be able to do things like watch netfilx and hulu on the TV? I just have to make sure this is a one cable solution here. Too many budget constraints lol

Wait a minute... DVI is digital, right? So I could just use a DVI to HDMI conversion cable. Perhaps I could get out cheaper, using a DVI card?

Hmm. Sounds like I am way better off going with a DVI card. I'll just run audio from the motherboard. What's the least expensive PCI (or agp) DVI card that can actually play blue rays and do all the HTPC stuff? I'm afraid I know little of HTPC stuff.

Ok, to play blue-ray you really need a native HDMI plug on the GPU with onboard audio. The 5450 is probably your best option there.
What's the CPU and mobo chipset you're working with?
My mate's HTPC is my old 2005 Compaq box, and the ATI chipset on it has an utter fail with putting audio over the 1st gen PCI-E bus, I had to swap the ATi card out for an Nvidia to get sound.

Your choices on the AGP socket are really, REALLY limited, and also expensive. You may be better off buying a whole new low end AMD board and chip with onboard graphics.

Ok that sounds like a good idea. Then I could get a decent PCIe card that would support audio over HDMI. But now I have a question about that. Do all cards that have an HDMI output support audio over HDMI? Or do I need to be careful about which one I get? Cause I am really just looking for the cheapest solution here.
