Is this too hot? Full load.

Thread Starter
I'm getting 70-80c with 100% load on all 4 cores. Is this dangerous? I'm running Tripcode Explorer (program to decode tripcodes, kinda like encrypted passwords) which is using 4 threads to find a matching tripcode.

Will I damage my CPU for running it this hot? I've stopped it for now. I'm using an Athlon II X3 450 unlocked to a Phenom II X4 B50 and OC'd from 3.2GHz to 3.52GHz (core voltage 1.488) and on stock cooling. I get very cool temps when idle (17c as I speak, about 10c with nothing running)

wel 70-80 is not too high but you might have a setting problem because idling at 17/10c with stock cooling is too low... whats your ambient temp?

A stock Athlon II X3 isn't design to run a quad. I can barely handle a 3 core.

Ambient as in the room my comp is in? It's in my bedroom, which has two walls facing the outside. This apartment must have very poor insulation, because during the winter (right now in Georgia it's in the 20's) my room is always about 50-60F while the rest of the house is in the low/mid 70's. It's horrible for me but good for my computers

Is it that big of an issue? I've heard plenty of other people unlocking the 4th core on the X3 perfectly. And I never have problems with it (although I've only had this for about a month)

You're looking at core temps, I would imagine, which are reported 12-15degrees cooler than they actually are.

Running at 1.488V on stock cooling is a bad idea, especially on an unlocked X3. I thought that the max safe temp for an Athlon II was 70C, so if you're running above that, don't expect your chip to last very long.

i think he meant the hsf.
its not really up to cooling an oced quad at all.
and the temps are really high even if your idle is low.
you might wanna consider getting a freezer 64, tx3 for cooling it rather

I believe your temperatures are way too high. At those levels your chip wont last long.

Alright, I thought I should look into some aftermarket cooling. I'll keep an eye on my temps till then and keep it below 70C. This is the only time I've seen it above 60ish, and that was while testing it.

mine hit 100 degrees during WEI. That scared me at first but then I realized it wasn't Celsius.

Buy the Hyper 212 Plus and throw the stock crap in the trash where it belongs.
