They hate polar bears and wish to accelerate global warming to destroy their natural habitat, or they want to help potentially cure cancer.

Some people do it because they want to help a cause cure diseases and do research. Others do it for the e-peen that comes with having a high PPD (you know I'm right).

Maybe they have family members suffering from illnesses that could be treatable with the folding at home work. And also, e-penis. "I fold 17000PPD....BEAT THAT!".

I don't waste money, or time because I fold while I'm at college...let them pay for it.

My components aren't going to wear because I keep them in safe temperatures at stock volts, and still have a decent overclock.

I get a good feeling for helping science out even if it amounts to nothing

and saving the penguins! Haha

I get a space heater for my room. And it cures cancer. Win-win.

To hopefully find a cure.

^this. The upstairs of my house barely gets any heat from the central heater . With one folding rig running, it uses less power than a space heater, yet puts out decent heat and helps find out why proteins mis-fold.

Theres been a lot of research that shows that cancer is a man-made disease, and if that is the case, it must be possible to, at least in someway, make it treatable to the point where it won't be considered a death sentence in certain situations. There won't ever be a vaccine that will make cancer disappear, but if we stop people from exposure to cancer causing things, and make certain types of cancer easily treatable, then we can save millions of lives.
