First Build/Budget Build

Thread Starter
I am currently in the market to build a new computer as the one I am currently on typing this is going on 9 years old. I got this computer when I was 10 so over the years it has been good to me but it is slowly dying and it isn't compatible with a lot of the new stuff out there.

I am looking to build the computer with $650. As for what I am going to use it for is the every day web surfing, email, iTunes, etc. but then I also want to be able to edit video with After Effects, Sony Vegas and what not.

This is what I have so far:

Antec 300 - $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129042

Western Digital 500GB HDD - $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320

Radeon HD 5570 1GB Video Card - $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150485

430 W SeaSonic PSU - $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151074

4 GB Ram - $44
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231274

AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 ghz - $145
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103808

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit - $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116754

I had this mobo picked out but they currently don't have any and I will be order in the next day. I'm not sure what I could get that would be the same?

Would this work?

Looks like a great build! You'll be very happy with it I think. The open box motherboard looks like a winner, and everyone here has good things to say about newegg's open box stuff, though I haven't had any personal experience. Some of the graphics guys may know better than I, but is there an advantage to going green (NV) and being able to use the CUDA side of them? I know for the CAD work I do the software is tailored for CUDA and really makes it fly, I'm not sure if there's that same integration for your work though.

I would get an Athlon II x4 for $99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-871-_-Product
Since the only difference between Athlon II and Phenom II is the extra l3 cache (which is only helpful in gaming)
Then with the extra $45 get a 5770 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131330 instead of a 5570

Wouldn't the L3 also be helpful in multi-threaded or CPU intensive processes like video editing as mentioned in the OP? I'd say unless you were looking to offload processing to a GPU, that he got the balance right by being a bit more CPU intensive.

When are you planning to buy, I hate to be the only voice in the thread to support your setup... I would check the Toms Hardware CPU charts and see where the options are, they usually have a video-encoding chart or something similar besides gaming.

Wouldn't this be the compatible mobo (suggested), the other one is DDR2...

It looks good, but I'd go with a better gpu, maybe the 5770,

I don't think the difference between the athlon II and phenom II is that big...
check my sig rig X3 425 run photoshop with images with 8192x8192 , can apply ??filters??(I forgot)...doesen't take that long, but it's my ram, gpu etc.

You said "multi-threaded or CPU intensive processes" that has nothing to do with the l3 cache. It has literally the same 4 cores as a Phenom II, just minus the L3 cache (the slowest cache). If anything it will limit the speed of the processing and rendering by a few percent.

If OP gets a 5770, this will eliminate a lot of bottleneck caused by the 5570. It will also allow him to do very GPU intensive things like editing frame by frame in Adobe After Effects.

$650, hm? For video editing with Sony Vegas (which I do myself on Hexagonal 2011) L3 doesn't help, but 6 cores do. A lot. Too bad there's no Athlon II x6

Try:
Phenom II x6 1055T + ASUS M4A87TD EVO - $260
OCZ Special Ops 1600 8-8-8 - $45
Antec NEO ECO 400C - $45
Galaxy GT 430 - $70, $60 AR
Rosewill Destroyer - $55 shipped
LITE-ON 24X DVD - $16 shipped after promo code EMCKJKD32
Samsung F3 1TB [Superbiiz]- $51 shipped after coupon code HELLO2011
Windows 7 Home Premium - $100 shipped
Total before rebates - $642
Total after - $632 AR
