Building a Music Production/Casual Gaming rig (under $500)

Thread Starter
Hello OCN,

I'm being asked by a friend to build him a rig that is powerful enough for some recording and editing of music and can play mostly just Starcraft 2 for under $500. So I'm just in a bit of a pinch right now because I have to make the thing silent as a ghost so it doesn't get picked up during recording.

So here's what I've got so far:

1TB Hitachi:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145304

Gigabyte 785G:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128394

EVGA GTR 240 512mb:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130533

Corsair CX430:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139017

Corsair XMS3:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260

Athlon II X2 240:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103714

Asus Xonar DX:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006

Antec 300:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0283272

Total:
$523.23 ($428.23 after all rebates)

Is there anything I can change to get this thing under $500 without losing performance?

If you can, try to find and x3 or x4 athalon processor as it will help make encoding faster than an x2.

or see if you can fit in a i3 530 somewhere!

Get an ATi 5670 in place of 540, it's much better and only $10 more.

Utter crap for music production.

Other than that... nice build.

To the OP:
You will need a reasonable external card for music-production.

Reasonable = NOT CREATIVE.

grab an:
M-audio
Terratec
Tascam
Saffire

Anyone who suggests a Creative/Asus/Xonar/most-cards-you-have-heard-of for production is, clearly, not well-versed in production.

Last... but by no means least... would be a reasonably priced set of reference monitors (NOT SPEAKERS!) like edirol, cakewalk, mackie(expensive), roland etc.

The monitors need to be reference - aka a flat output/response.

I just used the same one from the OP, just at a different site for cheaper; I'm not really knowledgable as to sound cards. If you can find something better for him that'd be great.

I've seen the reviews for the OCZ special ops ram is it seems to come DOA 50% of the time

I'll use some of those links for other parts though, +rep
