Best $50 PSU? RESOLVED

Thread Starter
My PSU is dying and I need a replacement ASAP. I'm going into Fry's today, so I'm looking there first. I don't know all that much about the PSU quality ones, so I thought I'd ask you guys. I'm looking at a Antec 430D Earthwatts at $60, how is that one? But i'm putting that off as a second option if I can't find one under $50 I want to get the best quality/price ratio. No online stores please, because I'm heading in the direction of Fry's anyways and I need that PSU today, since I need to use my computer today.

Thanks guys.

Resolved! I bought an Antec Earthwatts 380D! See here: Post link.

I don't know what Fry's prices are. The Earthwatts is a solid unit and that's about a typical retail price for it, which isn't great but isn't terrible.

The CX430 is a viable option that they might have for $50 or less, but keep in mind it's a 380W.

Don't buy ANYTHING from CoolerMaster for less than $80, everything they have under that price point is crap. And avoid the cheap Thermaltake TR2 / PurePower units, they're overrated HEC crap. OCZ might have something decent in that price range, the StealthXStream II units are pretty solid.

And if something costs $20 or less then it's a bomb.

Alright, looks like I got no other choice then. Earthwatts 430D it is then. I was just hoping that there was some other good unit I missed for a lower price, but you gotta take what you got i guess.. Thanks again Phaedrus+1

This was in the Online Deals section. It's a good PSU, made before they were aquired by OCZ.

I'll see if they have the CX430 in store, as I don't see it on the website. Their selection for <500W units are quite slim. Is there any difference between the Earthwatts 430D and the 380D besides the lower wattage? It's $10 less. Do you think I can get away with a 380W unit for now? (not looking for any big upgrades in the future, althought I do have an extra 250GB Hitachi IDE HDD that I didn't put into my sig rig info. Dunno if it'll make a difference).

Same one I found. I may look into getting that.

I don't see a price on those websites, plus I can't wait (literally) for it to arrive in the mail.

If it's for your sig rig, then yes the EA380D will do. It's the same as the EA430D, just 50W lower.

Two things here. First he specifically stated NO ONLINE SALES as he want's to pick it up today. Second, that deal is effectively ended as both sources are out of stock. It helps to read the original post IN IT'S ENTIRETY you are replying to as well as checking out the deal you are recommending prior to posting it.

Thanks for your help guys. Picked up a Antec EW (EarthWatts lol) 380D. No more burnt rubber smell. Plus for $50 it's quite the PSU! I opened up the ThermalTake I had, and found a ruptured capacitor, and if that wasn't enough, another one was bulging. Lesson learned here, cheaping out on a PSU and the Purepower 430W by ThermalTake is utter crap.
