Powered or unpowered speakers

Thread Starter
I am not looking for a surround sound per se, just two good speakers (or a bar speaker) and a sub. The deal is that I am getting this receiver from my buddy for free. It is an older receiver - Sony - I do not know of specs yet. But according to him, it was a high end receiver when he bought it (about 10 years ago). It has SPDIF in as far as I know (I am yet to take possession and look it over). At any rate, nothing can beat a free receiver.
The question now is what speakers should I run off of the receiver to get optimal output. I do not have a big budget for speakers - $150 will be my max for a pair and another $150 for a decent sub. I am inclined towards using two unpowered speakers - any suggestions on what I can use? What about automotive speakers - do they work?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Automobile speakers might work...They have low impedance, which most home receivers can't handle. You have to check the lowest impedance your receiver can sustain.

For $150, you can't go wrong with Polk bookshelf speakers. Go on Newegg and look it up. They're around $120 for the Monitor 40/50. Sometimes Newegg have discounts on them too. For subwoofer, go with this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-633, if you can spare more $, then this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-635

This sub looks good too(according to specs and reviews), but I never audition it before. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=303-430

Ok. Finally took possession of my free receiver. It is no where close to earth shattering (or should I say glass). But as I said, price is right. Seems it does not have enough oomph to run good subs. It was part of a Sony cheap home theater setup. Here are the specs I could gather from the internet.

100 x 5 Receiver with a 75 Watt Powered Subwoofer with 8" Driver
Sony HTDDW750 Home Theater System
575 Watt Home Theater System
Dolby® Digital, dts®, Dolby Pro Logic® II Decoding
Slim Center Speaker, 4 Satellite Speakers, w/ 75 Watt Subwoofer
Preprogrammed Remote Commander® Remote Control
Features
STR-K750P Receiver : 100 Watts x 5 (8 ohms 1 kHz, 0.7% THD)
SA-VE75P Speaker Package
SA-WMSP75 Subwoofer
Pre-programmed Universal Remote Commander® Remote Control
Receiver: STR-K750P
Power Output Stereo : 100 Watts x 2 (8 ohms 40 - 20,000 Hz, 0.09% THD)
Multi-Channel Output : 100 Watts x 5 (8 ohms 1 kHz, 0.7% THD)
Dolby® Digital, dts® Dolby Pro Logic® II Decoding
Digital Cinema Sound™ System (Cinema Studio EX)
Tuner with 20 FM + 10 AM Station Presets
Digital Signal Processing (DSP type) 32 Bit
Inputs and Outputs
1 Coaxial Digital Input
1 Optical Digital Input
Headphone jack 1/4" Type
Analog Audio Inputs x 2
Analog Audio Output x 1
Composite A/V Input x 3
Composite A/V Output x 1
Monitor Output x 1 (Composite Video Type)
A/V Remote Commander® Remote Control
Speaker Section
Speaker Package: SA-VE75P
Subwoofer Satellite System Contains 1 Powered Subwoofer, Slim Center Speaker, 4 Satellite Speakers
Magnetically Shielded Front, Center, Rear, Subwoofer
75 Watts x 1 (6 ohm 28 - 200 Hz, 0.8% THD)
Discrete Output Transistors

So, are the speakers and sub recommended in post above still good or too good for this unit to handle? I need something this unit can handle - at least for the time being. More importantly, I need a sub this thing can handle.

You can't use powered speakers with it, you need passive speakers. They need to be 8 or 6 Ohm (which most hi-fi or home theater speakers are anyway).

You should be OK to use any powered sub you like with it, 'powered sub' means that it's active and has it's own amp built in (the same way active speakers do) and the receiver only sends the original signal to the sub, not an amplified one so it doesn't do much work at all for the sub.

How does the current sub connect to the receiver?

Thanks for the help thus far.

I did get two speakers that came with it. They are little biddy - guess I will try them out. I did not get the sub that normally came with it. But it seems it connects to the receiver via some sort of jack pin.

Car speakers aren't designed for home use. You risk blowing the whole system.

Any bookshelf speakers will work, but they just won't sound as good without an amplifier: active or external.

How big is your room? If this is for a desktop set-up, you don't need a whole lot of power. I'd try Boston Acoustics, KRK, or Yamaha. I've also read the Edifier Studio 2.0 series is good, which has a shared amplifier design.

You cannot use a passive subwoofer with that receiver. Those ebay ones are pure crap. Look at the recommendation I linked you.

I wouldn't even bother with a sub to be honest, unless you have a large room. You won't get your money's worth with one at a $150 budget. Decent monitors will be much more satisfying.

Goto a pawn shop. I got my Paradigm mini bookshelves and Sub from there for 70 bucks or so. You probably find some decent speakers if you look around.
