HDMI + DVI = no picture?

Having trouble extending my desktop. Have an Asus 24"monitor as my primary via DVI and a 32" LCD television as my secondary via HDMI. Have it set in windows 7 as extended desktop, so they should be tied together, in theory. Well, my Asus 24" monitor works fine by itself, but if I turn the LCD television I get no picture on it, and the the Asus monitor resorts to a small screen of my desktop with no icons/mouse cursor. Turning the LCD television back off resets my monitor back to normal. What is going on here, folks? I have done extended desktops in the past with no problem and the HDMI worked fine back when I used it as my primary monitor. I'm so confused. Any ideas?

Okay, I got picture via HDMI now. But it will not extend the desktops, even if I set it to that in Windows 7.
