M2N68-LA (Ivy8) motherboard question

Thread Starter
Well heres my question I currently have a amd athlon 64 x2 duel core processor 3600+ 1.90 ghz here is my Mobo http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...t=3692715#N433

Im just trying to figure out what is the highest cpu i can put in it and also What kind of power supply Could I use...Or if I Can just use any kind I wasnt entirely sure on power supplies and how they worked and im sure there are different sizes I honestly think I should build a computer from scratch but Idk Im just trying to get by and whatever anyone can say would be helpful thanks alot and the reason I was thinking about getting a better power supply Im probally going to invest in a better video card too And I didnt know if Would need the extra watts Currently I only have 250 watt power supply.

i believe that this motherboard cannot accept a cpu with a TDP higher than 95w so highest Athlon AM2 would be a 5600 im thinking, Phenom X3 8600 or Phenom X4 9600, some people have said that Athlon II/Phenom II chips under 95w will work on this motherboard however i cannot confirm this..

as far as a power supply goes anything above 450w should do you fine, depending on Graphics card, could use a lesser one or a higher one...

I Have the same motherboard in a COMPAQ Presario SR5223WM(GN573AAR)
AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ DDR2 2gb and a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1gb
I'm running with a 650w power supply, not to long ago i was running with the stock 180w= crash with a 160gb and 500gb hdd and 9500gt all hooked up, upgraded to 300w= crash once in a while, then put a 430w and it did fine just couldn't overclock my gpu, and then finally upgraded to a 650w= handles very well and i can overclock nicely

now my only dilemma is because of the bios chipset i can not over clock my cpu like you normally would.

Any suggestions?

throw it out and upgrade?i wouldnt want to oc on that board at all. im sure you could get a decent athlon quad and am2+ board for about 150.

well I'm planing to upgrade form an Athlon 64 x2 5000+ to a Phenom x4 9500, I'm using the same exact IVY 8 board as the poster, so this should work out just fine right?

Those boards only accept what chips the OEM sold with them; That's all the BIOSes are written for.
believe me,i know..
i tried to stick a 5600+ in one and it wouldn't boot

yea, but the 4800+ it's supposed to support for it's max x2 athlon is a 110w tdp, so I don't see why it wouldn't support an x4 Phenom that's at 95w TDP
post #8 of 9
Correction, upon refreshing the webpage it went form 110 to 68w TDP
post #9 of 9
but as far as the 5600+ goes I have a 5000+ running in mine currently with no known issues
