If it's a dv6 or dv9 series, with an AMD processor and an Nvidia chipset, it's a known defect for no display.

Basically the chipset becomes unsoldered from the board. No 100% fix besides replacing it, and if you just replace the motherboard there is no guarantee that it wont' happen again.

www.nvidiasettlement.com - check that to see if your friend's laptop is among the affected.

if its a dv- ? series produced from 06-08 its more than likely the motherboard. I had to have mine replaced 4 times before their series of extended warranties ran out. much like the problem with old xbox 360's they just replace with other faulty parts.

never again will i purchase an hp product

Thanks! Had the same problem with my Compaq V3015NR. Already bought a replacement, but now I might get another replacement. +1 rep

Chipset doesn't matter, what is the video card?

Check to see if its nvidia, and see if it is covered under the extended warranty.

Sorry to say, but I woudn't hold out much home for them replacing it; HP isn't too good about replacing issues, even if it is an extremely common issues (such as with the dv2000 I believe).

My dv6 isn't affected by this, is it? I run an AMD proc with HD4530 graphics... its not Nvidia so hopefully it won't die.
