New build, advise needed & first post!

Thread Starter

Hi there, found my way here while googling motherboards for the new and shiny sandy bridge stuff intel came up with. Now, I haven't had a desktop since 2004 so I am quite lost with many things and I could use some advise with my build.

The shop of my choice will be hardwareversand.de since I live here across the puddle they call the atlantic.

I am very much new to overclocking, but since the 2500K is only about 10e more than 2500 I thought maybe I should give it a try. How hard can it be..?

So which motherboard should I get? I was looking at the ASUS P8P67 and the P8P67-PRO/Deluxe&other models but I can't really figure out which one I should pick? I looked at the comparison chart at asus.com but can't really figure which features am going to need? I think they all have usb 3. I am only going to have one GPU to start with. Maybe a second one when the cost comes down although they might be obsole by then... looking at how fast thing go. WLAN card will have to have a slot but other than that I don't know...

Here is what I came up with anyway:
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155
COOLER: not a clue yet, maybe Arctic Freezer xtreme Rev 2.0 or Scythe Mugen 2 CPU-cooler
MOBO: ASUS P8P67 PRO, Sockel 1155, ATX, DDR3 (this one is 20e more than the plain p8p76)

GRAPHICS: ASUS EAH6950/2DI2S/2GD5, AMD Radeon HD 6950, 2GB, PCI- Express (I was hoping to tweak it to HD6970 with BIOS update)

CASE: FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R3 Black Pearl
PSU: Antec Truepower New 650W

HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1000GB, SATA II (HD103SJ)
SSD: OCZ SSD 60GB SATA 2,5' Vertex 2 Extended
RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333 CL9 x2 (8GB total)
DVD-RW: LG GH22NS50 bare schwarz
WLAN: some wlan card, don't know which yet.

Thanks for reading all that! Any thoughts?

I recommend the pro over the standard P8P67 because it supports SLI and has more PCIe bandwidth.

For the motherboard, I would definitely take the P8P67-PRO over the basic one because of the additional PCI-E 2.0 Lanes that you will need if you want to go Crossfire.

Cooling wise, the Mugen 2 will serve you well I am sure. That is what my personal pick would be between those two.

Also, why are you getting 8GB of RAM? If you are gaming then all that will do is put additional stress on your IMC making it harder to overclock. If you use applications like Adobe Photoshop or AutoCAD then it'd be worth it, however 8GB is too much for gaming or the average user. You would also be better off getting DDR3 1600 RAM instead of the 1333's. Overclocking on the 2500K will be much easier with 1600MHz RAM.

Overall, pretty good build. I hope you consider my opinions, however.
