Sandy Bridge not doing much for current i7 9xx gamers? - Page 7

I must admit, I recently did a i7 950 build, spur of the moment as I was having on going issues with my Q9450/X48T setup... It pissed me off a few too many times so I just replaced everything. Of course, I totally forgot about SandyBridge when I decided to do this... and right after I ordered the system I realized SB was going to be unveiled officially at CES... I did not know however that they'd be shipping right away...
Hope I didn't make a mistake! I know the i7 950 is powerful and the processor is less expensive than an 2600K, but the motherboards of SB are less.

Wasn't earth shattering back then, but people still swear by them today for some odd reason... It's like everything cycles.

The c2q people were probably saying the same thing the i7-9xx people are now, the people getting the new gen cpu are probably saying the same thing the i7-9xx people were saying to the c2q people back then.
I didn't say the same thing back then and not now either, I didn't think any of these CPU's were Earth shattering; actually I made my decision to not upgrade from C2D/C2Q to i7 because I know the difference in gaming would not be that great. Why do I think this? Because I originally upgraded from Athlon X2 to C2D E6600 considering people were raving all about the super performance that they were getting. I learned my lesson from that because there wasn't even that much of a performance difference. The only performance I got was that my wallet was $800 lighter. I only upgrade when at least two cycles have past so with Lynnfield and Westmere gone by I'm good with Sandy Bridge as I'm hurting in performance with Battlefield Bad Company 2 with my current setup. And after that probably by Rockwell or after that I'd be safe to upgrade again.

Only reason anyone would need all this extreme performance for is for applications such as 3D modeling and multimedia encoding, but honestly how many people really do that? Unless you're an industry professional all this extra hyperthreading ain't gonna help crap for gaming. For gaming performance increase all these new CPU's barely do anything for performance. So people with 1156/1366 and even top end AMD systems have nothing to worry about for gaming performance. It's when you need speed and want to cut down time on creating and encoding things such as 3D modeling, compiling source code, and encoding movies that you would actually need all this performance.

So why are all these people so scared of their current 1156 and 1366 setups? Are people afraid they're not going to be able to play solitaire anymore with grandma?

As for the next Intel sockets to replace 1366, I don't think they're going to be Earth shattering either. But people who are waiting for 1356/2011 are probably going to be happy if they're coming from S775.

If your system can handle everything you throw at it then you're all set.No need to upgrade.

Not a surprise since you are comparing an "old" High end platform vs a new mainstream platform, the platform that is going to replace the current 1366 is on the way.

What I found more interesting is that the new mainstream platform performs better than 1366, wich is more apealing to see what the new platform will offer to the high end sector.

Anything over x4 in just about everything is a waste.

Software blows.

I'd just like to note the reason people are acting this way is because many people on 1366 talked a lot of smack to just about everyone about how much better their gear was. Coming from AMD I can tell you that 99% of the threads created there about the performance of an AMD chip would have several Intel people with 9xx talking a lot of trash.

It's simple backlash, top dog got replaced by mainstream, top dog barking a lot but no longer has any bite. Now they rally behind wait for x6 wait for x8 with the sole purpose of trasking mainstream SB chip users with their mega awesome benchmark results that in no way reflect real life performance.

haswell will probably be 10%-20% faster than SB and overclock slightly higher...

The cycle of stupid continues.
