It's just tricky because you want to stay on top of it, but the cpus are so far ahead of the software the high end stuff is wasted so much it's hard to justify the cost - and that was two years ago, it's the same thing today.
I also went with the 2500K for my brother for the dame reason. For 99% of the stuff he will be using it for (gaming, web, school, etc.) the HT is a waste. Four years from now when the HT would help a bit he can just upgrade to the 8 core 11nm stuff.

Yeah, that was my logic as well... Which could very well be flawed, but I'm too poor to spend extra on something I'd rarely use.

If I'm not mistaken or do not misunderstand the Intel CPU Roadmap, there is something coming up in the 2nd half of this year on Sandy Bridge with 6/8 cores and 3ch DDR3, it might worth upgrading to that from a 1366 if one wants to. Whether it's still 1155 or not, no one knows for sure because there are conflicting infos posted (according to that April 2010 link anyway). IB won't happen until Jan of 2012 according to the roadmap.

That site you linked to says this on first page:

"Before you join the uninformed; concluding that there wouldn't be an enthusiast platform on Sandy Bridge microarchitechture in 2011, we'd like to show you some exclusive knowledge about Intel's next generation HEDT.
A Look Into Intel's Next Gen Enthusiast Platform : Sandy Bridge E & Waimea Bay
Intel will stick to using differentiated desktop platforms for the purpose of market segmentation in 2011. The LGA1155 Sandy Bridge-MS we've heard about over the past months will join the Cougar Point family of chipsets to corner the Mainstream and Essential market segments. For the highend segment, Waimea Bay will take the lead by joining Sandy Bridge-E processors to the Patsburg Platform Controller Hub (PCH). Because Sandy Bridge on LGA1155 will only be available in 2 core and 4 core versions, those looking forward to having 6 cores or more will have to put their money where it counts: on the Waimea Bay platform
"

I agree it is all speculation and only intel really knows, and the intel roadmap (though that slide came from intel) can change, the speculation from news sources I can find, INCLUDING THAT LINK YOU POSTED, is that intel is coming out with another platform later this year (which is different socket), with 6 core cpus for the enthusiast desktop or what they call HEDT (high end desktop).

I would much prefer a single socket for all, and if the enthusiast market only comes with $1000 cpus (which is ridiculous for 2 extra cores), then I will be switching to mainstream...but everything I read from news source says it will be 2 different platforms.

While Intel does plan on releasing 6/8 core chips in the 2nd half (very doubtful they will be released on time), I do not think that it is going to be Sandy Bridge.

It says on Wikipedia Ivy Bridge is slated for Q2 2011 though it is likely it won't drop until 2012. We will see.

Edit: Source

Quote:
During his keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco Sept. 13, CEO Paul Otellini said that the company's "Ivy Bridge" processor, a 22-nm chip, is on schedule and will be delivered in the second half of 2011. The chips are already in sample production, he said.

No, Sandy Bridge will be limited to 4 cores. Ivy Bridge (read: still 1155, just a die shrink), will have 4, 6, and 8 cores.

I think this is true. Though I don't know what they're going to put in the new socket if Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge are both 1155...

1365 is going to be a server socket. Maybe EVGA will release an SR-3 sporting this socket but IB chips will run on SB mobos, though an X68 chipset may be released the socket apparently remains this time from what Intel says.
