Streaming video over Wifi stuttering

Thread Starter
I got a Sony BDP-S570 recently and decided to stream videos over my home network instead of building a htpc. It uses significantly less power, and costs me less, and it's easier for my parents to use...

Anyway, I have it connected over Wifi to a Netgear WDNR3300 router. That router is acting as a wireless AP only, and runs to a gigabit switch that goes to the other computers in my house.

The computer that I'm streaming off has a gigabit nic. It is my sig rig. My rig is running Mezzmo and transcoding the video so that my Blu-ray player can play it. I can transcode a 2 hour video in 30 minutes so my processor is not the problem. My hard drives are in a RAID 5 that can output to 150 MB/s sustained and 270 MB/s peak. My rig is not the slow end.

The player is connected via 5 Ghz wireless N through the Netgear router. It has an 85% signal strength (which I know really means nothing because it's not a dB rating, but hey, it likes the signal quality) so the wifi shouldn't be the slow point.

The theoretical slowest part of this system is the router's ports. They are only 10/100 ports, however at the worst possible conditions I should be able to stream 50 mbps through it.

So all streaming works perfectly, until the bit rate gets above ~18.2 mbps, then the video stutters until I pause it for a few seconds to rebuffer, or the bit rate drops.

Does anyone know how to possibly eliminate this issue, apart from wiring the player, as it's at a part of the house that I really don't want to wire to.

Try another streaming app.

If it's not the app then it's something else. Don't put all your eggs into one basket. If you knew for sure, you wouldn't be asking, would you?

From a network perspective, your wireless is the bottle neck. You did say you are using 5 GHz N, but you didn't say what connection speed you are using. When you fing your connection rate, cut that in half to get your betst possible throughput.

To rule out the wireless network, plug your Sony BDP-S570 into a swtich along with your PC you are streaming to.

It could be the player, can it def play that bit rate from the network? To eliminate as a possibility plug a media player onto the network on a laptop or so and play the same content.
