No matter what I do, my OC fails, why?

Thread Starter
It seems like whatever I do, my OC fails. I've tried lowering the BCKL, raising the voltage on both DRAM and Vcore, but nothing goins the way I want it. After about 1.5 hours I get:

"FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.4999790192 expected less than 0.4"

Any ideas?

Here is my information:

According to my BIOS I've set the DRAM Voltage to 1.64 and if I set it to 1.65 I will Damage my CPU ( is that true? ).

1.65V is the maximum specification from Intel for DDR3 RAM. You can set it up to and including this depending on what your RAM specification is.

Rounding error could be caused by not enough Vcore or not enough QTT (not sure that the equivalent setting for the LGA1366 chips is).

Is that 1.5v ICH voltage accurate? If so, reduce it immediately. That is far, far too high.

Try reducing QPI/VTT and CPU PLL as well.

No, going one notch higher on vDIMM is not going to harm your CPU.

What are you trying to run your uncore and QPI speeds at?

The ICH Voltage is set to "Auto" in BIOS. What should I set it to?

How much should I reduce QPI/VTT and CPU PLL with?

These are my RAM: http://www.corsair.com/cmx6gx3m3a1600c9.html I am trying to run them on 1600MHz (5) uncore: 3200MHz (10) so it's the "stock" speeds on them.

The only voltages I've changed to anything else than "Auto" is VCore and DRAM Voltage.

3.2GHz is actually quite high of an uncore for a Gulftown. They only need to run it at 1.5x DDR speed.

ICH (core not IO if there are options for both) should be left at 1.1v.

I would try starting out with 1.5v on CPU PLL and changing it if necessary. I actually run mine at 1.3v, even for 4.4GHz.

QPI/VTT is a bit touchy on Gulftown. I rapidly lose stability at anything past 1.335v and run 1.295v for a 3.26GHz uncore. For your current settings I would drop uncore down to 3GHz (15x) and use around 1.25v QPI/VTT.

Oh I did not know that, I always thought you set uncore to 2x the DDR speed.

These are my voltage settings:

VDroop Control = High VDroop
CPU Voltage (V) = +0.110
CPU PLL Voltage (V) = Auto
QPI Voltage (V) = Auto
DRAM Voltage (V) = 1.64
DDR_VREF_CA_A (V) = Auto
DDR_VREF_CA_B (V) = Auto
DDR_VREF_CA_C (V) = Auto
DDR_VREF_DQ_A (V) = Auto
DDR_VREF_DQ_B (V) = Auto
DDR_VREF_DQ_C (V) = Auto
IOH Voltage (V) = Auto
ICH Voltage (V) = Auto

( Note that the CPU Voltage raises with an offset from the stock vcore @ 1.176v )

Might these settings be why I am getting Really high temperatures aswell? There's just so much to learn about this stuff..

Don't leave anything on AUTO except for the DDR_VREFs.

Set CPU PLL to around 1.3-1.6v, QPI voltage to 1.25v, both IOH and ICH voltage to 1.1v.

What are the other options for vdroop?

Only for Bloomfield (the 45nm 1366 chips). It's 1.5x (minimum) for Gulftown (32nm). Very few Gulftowns can even do more than about 3.3GHz uncore, stably.

Overly high volts and uncore speed are certainly going to add to temps.

The other option is Low-Vdroop, only those two.

How do I know that the CPU PLL is correct? Will it result in boot failure or rounding error?

Here are a couple of other settings I've got aswell, I think they are what they should be:

[ Cell Menu - QPI Configuration ]
QPI Links Speed = Full-Speed
QPI Frequency = 4.800GT

[ Cell Menu - ClockGen Tuner ]
CPU Amplitude Control = 800mV
PCI Express Amplitude Control = 800mV
CPU CLK Skew = Normal
IOH CLK Skew = Normal

[ Cell Menu - CPU Feature ]
Intel EIST = Disabled
Intel C-STATE = Disabled
C1E Support = Disabled
Overspeed Protection = Enabled
Hyper-Threading Function = Enabled
Execute Bit Support = Enabled
Set Limit CPUID MaxVal to 3 = Disabled
Intel Virtualization Tech = Enabled
Intel VT-d Teck = Disabled

Thanks a lot Blameless, I was begining to ask myself how people could get up to 4.4GHz when I couldn't even get up to 4.0GHz, seems like it's just lack of knowledge

Edit

I just remembered that I got a bluescreen this night with error 124, that indicates to high QPI/VTT right? I hope I didn't fry anything...

With only those two options for vdroop, I'd leave it on high.

CPU PLL has a very subtle effect. Just drop it as low as it can go and if things don't get any worse, leave it.

Try these (if I don't repeat it it's fine as is:

CPU Amplitude Control = 700mV
PCI Express Amplitude Control = 700mV

Overspeed Protection = DISABLED

There is no hard rule for BSOD codes, but yes, 124 errors are frequently QPI/VTT issues.

I doubt you fried anything, the only voltage that was really worrying was the ICH, which may have been a read error anyway.

Why do I need to disable Overspeed Protection? Isn't that helping me not frying the CPU?
