OCZ Vertex 160gb Raid 0 Setup - Need some advice

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Hey!

I have an Alienware M17x R2 which I want to remove my two spindle HDD's and drop in two 160 vertex drives.

I'm sorry if these questions seem stupid, but I've been out of it for a while =]

Is there Trim support yet for Raid 0 SSDs?

Will these drives over a 6-12 month period loose more than 50% of their speed (I've heard stories and seen benchmarks prooving this, I have no idea *** went wrong with their setups).

Thanks =]

I dont think there is raid support for TRIM. You can use TRIM for a single drive on a RAID controller, but the drive in an RAID array can't use TRIM. Which is lame.

And, you will not SEE a drop in performance over time. In fact you shouldn't see any performance drop (even though benchmark may show otherwise). I've been running old Intel 80GB G1 (no trim) forever and I haven't notice any performance drop. You may see performance drop if you fill it up too much. Read rates are almost never affected. Only write rates gets affected when your drive gets filled up.

You can do manual 'TRIM' by running space consolidation programs. Search for 'Tony Trim' which was some steps to perform manual trims. Do this once a month and you'll facefacebe a happy camper, works for RAID too.

Thanks for the response =]

I've asked this accross a few forums and the general consensus is you wont SEE a difference, but there will be a drop over time (to be expected, and thankfully nobody thinks I'll see that big a drop).

Could you help me regarding instalation too? =]

Assuming I buy the two OCZ Vertex drives today, what do I need to setup the raid? Can I:

1. Install both ssds in the laptop.
2. Enter Bios, select Raid;
3. Followed by Raid 0
4. Turn-off PC and re-boot from Windows 7

(Is there any disadvantage of not selecting ACHI?)

Or is there something else which needs to be done?

Sorry for the questions, but I've never used SSD's and I've never installed a raid setup =[

If you are using the RAID controller then it should includes AHCI functions.

I dont know what raid controller is on the laptop but your steps are right. If windows 7 setup doesn't have the raid drivers then you need to load them during the setup, otherwise setup wont see your raid array.

then just install and enjoy the ssd raid 0, there is nothing else to be done (you can always install the raid controller managers for maintence purposes)

Thats good to know!! =]

I found out what the raid controller is for the laptop: Intel Rapid Store Technology software RAID on the Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller.

I'm not too sure if you can make anything from that???? In terms of whether or not I'd need to load the drivers or not.

If I do have to pre-load the drivers, how would I go about doing that?

So it's a intel controller, windows 7 should have the drivers for it, you dont need to load anything. I'd sugguest update the driver after you successfully install windows.

if you really want to load the drivers beforehand, during the the windows setup there will be an option when choosing paritions like "Load Drivers", and just point that to the drivers, on a floppy or usb key.

Sweet, I'll keep it as simple as possible.

I'll setup the raid array, restart and boot from W7 disc and go from there.

Would I be faced with setting up the 128kb blocks like a traditional hdd setup? If so, what do I set it too?

Thanks for all your help so far =] Very appreciated!!!

I'm going to double post this rather than make a new thread...

Are the OCZ Vertex Series II 160gb SSD's, which run SF 1222 controllers, able to run garbage collection whilst in raid 0? Or is GC limited to indilix controllers of OCZ?
