Intel extreme procs have always been $1000 on release, nothing new. That's what happens with the best of the best.

How much were 920's on regular e-tailers like $300 something? Those were rock solid x58 CPU.

I bet the 920's equiv will be a 6 core/12 thread for around $300 and that'll be price to enter into x68

then the 8 core like 500-700 then of course the beasty 12 cores from 800-1000.

I don't think it'll hinder SB because of the totally different sockets. So even though a x68 6/12t cpu might be more enticing than a 2600k at the same price point, you gotta factor in how much it's worth it to take the plunge since the mobo will cost more and the ram will cost more too

What your saying is the equivilent of stating that 3 HDD's in raid 0 is not noticeably faster than one or two striped drives. Triple channel memory is critical for cpu/memory intensive applications, and has a large impact on performance for applications like Stanfords FAH project (BIGADV).

X58 right now is basically useless. Aside from servers and extreme overclocking there is absolutely no point to getting one over 1156. Intel isn't going to make the same mistake.

You won't see any overlap this time around. The 2600K is priced at $330, and given Intel's history this price won't change. By the time 2011 is ready we will probably have a 2700K or 2800K at the same price.

This puts the absolute minimum you'll see any 2011 processor at $350-$400.

But then you have to remember than Intel still has plans for a triple-channel LGA 1356, which should release around the same time. These processors will probably run around $300-600, and essentially target the enthusiast market (eg, those with money enough for GTX 580 quad-SLI). That puts the 2011 processors at $500-1000+.

2011 is largely going to be a server socket. We might see a few high end OC motherboards, but its likely just going to be a replacement for LGA 1567 (a socket I'm sure most of you have never heard of)

Which is absurd for many reasons; not the least of which being that LGA-1155 dual-channel has lower memory latency and more memory bandwidth than LGA-1366 tri-channel does.

On the other hand, by the time you feel you need to upgrade your (superior) Intel chip, you'd likely benefit from a new mobo anyway. .

Unless you really feel the need to upgrade every time a new chip comes out. In that case, it's going to cost you a lot either way. AMD is nice in that they have their neat sockets that last for decades or whatever, but you get what you pay for when you build with Intel instead.
