MX518 stops working intermittently

I've had 3 MX518s, and they've all died after about 1-2 years. Each time, they'd start shutting off and on again 2-3 times a minute, each shut off only lasting a few seconds. I'll be using it like normal, when I'll hear the usb device disconnected noise, the mouse cursor will freeze, the red optical tracking LED will shut off, and about 2 seconds later the device is recognized again and works. It gradually gets worse until it's shutting off 10-20 times a minute.

Since this has happened 3 times to me, I assume this must be a common flaw with the devices, including IIRC on my last computer, so it isn't a usb port/computer issue.

Does anyone know what's going on or if there's a fix for this?

my 7 year old one does this now, i think the cable has an issue somewhere after a while of being used
a smack on my desk usually fixes it for a few days before it starts to work again.

Same thing has happen to me with 2 or 3 MX518s. I'd just call them and get a RMA.

Yep sounds very much like the usb cord problem, its happend to me too. Pinch forward the cord into the mouse at the end where it connects and you should see the mouse light up again. Thats the problem cord disconnecting.

Yep, that's it - pushing the cord inward fixes it... but... it's always going to be tugged on, so is there a more permanent fix? If I open it up, would I be able to reseat the connector or something?

Yeah when you release the pressure it will stop working again because the wires inside have broken but it confirms the problem.

From what I have read it is fixable but its not easy, to fix it you would have to open up the mouse, cut out the outer cable and then reconnect the wires inside by soldering it or by replacing the usb cable which would require skill and paitence. Your better off RMA'ing it unfortunately imo.

I opened up my one and I think the reason this problem is quite common is because the cord inside the mouse just before it comes out is twisted and held tightly at a 90 degree angle thats why after some time the connection in the wires at that bend breaks off.

Mine had these exact symptoms.

I had to open it up and pull the USB cable back into the mouse a bit because the cable was being pulled out and the connection was getting broken with the board in the mouse.

So I finally got around to making a warranty claim - but here's the problem. The serial number is printed along the bottom of the mouse. It's a slightly recessed area, but the center of it still makes contact with the mousing surface, so the ink has rubbed off. You can still kinda make out some logos and stuff, but the serial number is totally gone.

I looked elsehwere on the mouse and cord, and through the original packaging, and I can't seem to find the S/N. Maybe I missed it somehow. Is there some other way to get the serial number?

I wrote their support to ask, and I just got a generic form letter of "to claim warranty service fill this out blah blah" - they just ignored my question/problem of being unable to obtain the S/N.
