Tech needs to adapt even if we're not fully utilizing it. No one needs more than 4 cores, but as tech advances we get 6 cores and now BD's 8 cores. So, it really doesn't matter if you're fully using it or not, all that matters is that there's room to improve it. That's all, really.

Cores are used, just not by the average consumer. I certainly make use of my four cores and actually could do with another one or two at times. You are saying we should abandon PCI-E 2 just because we can.

While technology has to be pushed forward there's no point in adopting something new when the old standard hasn't even been fully used yet. Considering tri-Fire/SLI cards don't saturate 3x8 PCI-E 2.0 there's absolutely no use or point to changing now.

I think PGA is still fine. I fell no need to use LGA. However, I do hope this is an unfinished prototype board, because that's what it feels like, not a potentially high end product - one of those PCIE 2.0 X16 slots needs swapping with a PCI/PCI x1 to get the dual spaceing between graphics cards for quad xfire.

With all the PCIE 2/3 debate, do we even saturate pcie 1.0 in terms of bandwidth? It is equivalent to a PCIE 2.0 @ 8x (I think 2.0 was needed because of more power hungry graphics cards)

I don't like linking Wikipedia but it's the easiest to understand.

PCIE 8x 2.0 equals 16x 1.0. 16x 2.0 Equals 32x 1.0. Even with tri/quad fire/SLI those lanes aren't saturated. The only advantages of switching over to 3.0 would be more lanes and bandwidth and slots being able to provide more wattage to video cards. The wattage doesn't bother me, as we can just connect 2x6 or 2x8 plugs to the cards. I can see 3.0 becoming necessary in the future but certainly not now.

PCIe lane counts are generally ruled by the chipset, so you could have a chipset with more lanes to get where you need to be as well.

So, why the move to PCIE 2? More wattage, more compatibility or cheaper? From what you say a high end board could be released with PCIE 1.0 but with thrice the lanes of PCIE 2.

I know I habitually misspell PCIe but it's not something that bothers me in the least.
