Win7 x64 Random Freezing, could be anything

Hey Guys,

I'm having some problems with freezing (sig rig) and I have no idea whats causing it. I have done some troubleshooting and heres what I have so far.

Symptoms:
Freezing (on whatever is on the screen when it freezes, no mouse movement, keyboard, etc).
Happens 2-5 minutes within boot
Requires hard reset
Sometimes sluggish/odd response about 2 seconds before freeze
Closing Google Chrome caused it to freeze immedietly after clicking the X, though this only happened twice
If it doesn't happen within 2-5 minutes, it either doesn't happen at all, or takes a long time to, for example: I had my computer working for 2 days, no freezes, without restarting it, shutting it down, or sleeping it.
Windows Recovery shows up after hard restart, asking if I want to try safe mode. In safe mode I had it freeze 1/2 times, though it could have been unrelated. I will investigate safemode a little more after this post

HEAT
Its not this, I've checked my temps and they are fine

RAM
I've done 2 passes in memtest without error, I'm going to check tonight with 10 passes, I don't think its the RAM

Chrome
unistalled, still happened

Registry Error
Cleaned my registry up

Virus
I rarely get virus', this isn't acting like one, and none of my scans have shown any

Software
This is my guess, but what?

Thanks for any help you guys can throw my way, it has been an extremely frustrating weekend.

*NOTE*

I did notice something a little weird, right before a freeze, I had the start menu open, it froze over msoft word, then it kind of unfroze and showed me recent documents, but then froze for good almost immediatley after.

Don't remember any significant recent changes I've done

Seems to be crashing within 2-5 minutes every time now.

Even happens in the "login" screen

It does seem like faulty ram, have you tried running on one stick then the other? Cant recall how mant cycles of memtest I did before it found a faulty stick it was into 1hour 20mins of testing....
Just read your NOTE, I had that with start menu too it took ages to open all the icons and stuff...

I don't mean to sound like I'm out to get you here.. But you said you've been cleaning your registry? Cleaning the registry does more damage than it does cleaning, believe me.. You want to just leave the registry alone.

If you actively cleaned your registry I wouldn't be surprised if that's what is causing your errors.

I was going to edit my last post, but I'll respond to this instead.

Cleaned the registry AFTER this was occuring, I rarely do it, and only clean out specific parts of the registry that I no longer need/use.

I understand your concern.

As for pulling a stick out, it hasn't crashed yet, and thats a good sign, I'm going to put the other stick in alone and see if it crashes. I will also try restarting with this stick in to see if it is just one of the "random times it doesn't freeze"

Looks like its the RAM right now.

Ah, alrighty then!

Well, my best advice would to be test all of your RAM with Memtest overnight for at least 12+ hours.. And see what the results are. If there are no errors, yay! If there are errors, well then at least we know what the problem is, and then you can choose what path you want to take.

A) Test all sticks until you find the bad one.

B) Just replace the RAM entirely.

other symptom Ive had with dodgy ram is where i could eneter the bios with a couple of taps on delete key, as it progressed i couldnt often it would boot all the way to windows....Obviously swap slots u put ram in too, as one may have bit of dust in or something....

Just wanna say, I had this exact problem for 2 years, tried everything many times over, several gpus, cpus, sets of ram etc etc.

The only thing that fixed it was dropping the ram from 1600mhz to 1333mhz, even though it was rated for 1600mhz. At 1600mhz it passed memtest many times.

Gave up in the end and just went for 1333mhz.

It kind of seems at this point like reseating the RAM fixed it, what a pitifully simple solution. I'll keep you guys updated :\\

Chase, my ram is actually under 1000mhz right now, I tend to clock at a need to basis
