About to begin stress test (very nervous). Will use Prime95 instead of OCCT this time.
I'm not sure Prime is any better than OCCT...

Well i ran about 15mins of prime, which isn't long i know. Was very stable and coretemp was 55c but CPU went up to 66c. Should i go off core or CPU temp?
That's way too hot, Core temp is off by 10C and the CPU temp is most reliable, when it says 66C, that's the true temp and that's the one you should always read Your tempature's are holding you back for further overclocks, you need to undervolt and underclock it a little. try not to get past 60C if possible. Silicon degradeation is bad

Is this your CPU? http://products.amd.com/en-gb/Deskto...il.aspx?id=532 because it looks like it's a C2 not a C3, and it says thermal design is 62C. So keep your CPU under 60C while at full load, otherwise it won't last long :/

But yeah wouldn't upping the volts require protection on the mosfets? I've been told that OC'ing CPUs with voltage increases might risk the mobo's components frying so I'm not pushing above stock 1.4v as of now due to a lack of mosfet heatsinks.
Unlikely to cause a problem at lets say 1.45, but sticking with 1.4v is a very good and safe idea for a good overclock.

What? I hope you meant to say "doesn't go past 60". And to what exactly are you referring to with CPU temp rather than core temp? With my setup, I get two values: one I assumed is the core temp (precision level is to 0.25 degrees), and the other I assumed i the socket (precision level is to whole degrees). The "socket" temp is always about 2 degrees cooler than the other one, and usually heats up a little more slowly. That's why I assumed it was a sensor in the mobo socket.

Yeah, I am perpetually annoyed that mine is a C2 instead of a C3. Really would like to get it up a bit higher, since I keep my apartment at about 62F in winter and have plenty of additional cooling ability.

It's defo C3 stepping. Just tried 1.45v and got BSOD so it's clearly unstable.

Might try to reseat. Was i a bit of a rush last night, probably didn't do the best job, just wanted it up and running again.

I know with the Asus software that I downloaded from the sit they give the socket temperature(as well as IOH ICH, etc..) and then I use "Real Temp GT" for the core temps.

Screen froze, computer started buzzing and wouldn't even reboot itself. After a good few hours of trying to restart (and failing each time) i unplugged the motherboard, reseated the hsf, then removed and replaced the bios battery. I honestly thought i buggered my computer completely. Finally managed to load into bios (just about), set it to default - and everything seems to be okay now.

It's a real shame - i was getting good results by overclocking. 10-15fps more in F1-2010 just by O/Cing the cpu, with much improved gameplay. Benchmarks were improving massively, about 20% increase in some circumstances. I was having fun in seeing how far my system could go by overclokcing my RAM and 460 aswell.

But now i'm unsure as to whether it's safe to overclock again. It's no problem updating in the near future, but i just wanted to max out my system before doing so, maybe even wait for keplar/northan islands/ivy/bulldozer etc on my current rig.

Is what happened last night simply an overclocking blip or cause for serious concern?

Any thoughts.

you can't brick it. it's impossible.
just go up slowly. start off overclocking but don't touch the voltages... yet
and remember to loosen RAM timing and all that shiz

Thanks for the advice, good to hear

Loose timings! I thought i needed tight. So would 1600 9-9-9 be better than 1333 7-7-7 then?
