People with 12GB or more RAM Thread

Sorry if this thread may seem stupid.

I made this thread for people that have 12GB or more RAM I was wondering.....

Why do you need so much for? what do you use it for? Is it any use? or just like seeing the extra physical memory in task manager?

And also, because you have soo much RAM, Do you disable the virtual memory?

I'm about to get 12GB, I use it for video editing, and also gives me a little more peace of mind.

Indeed it is cheap, besides photo editing, video editing etc what else would you be using it for? It's seem's like a bit overkill lol

12 is not enough for me. I do 3D animation and heavy post production.

Example:

In this scene there are 3 instanced trees over a huge area. Each tree is 3 million polygons plus. If I were not too instance those trees I would need 2000GB of ram+ in order to render this same scene without instancing.

I never have enough.

Also, After Effects uses 2GB of ram per processor thread. If you have a 8 core that means 16GB is the minimum.

I am upgrading to 24GB of ram soon.

If you are an overclocker and general gamer/user, there is no reason for above 6GB. Any more (I'm talking X58) puts more strain on the IMC, which can yeild potentially lower overclocks, and you won't benefit from the extra RAM. A normal user won't even touch 4GB.

If you do 3D Animation or video editing, heavy image editing, post production, 3D modelling or anything like that, that's the only real valid reason to have 12GB, or more.

Atom, People doing real work need the memory. (^Shademaster)

People who play games and run benchmarks, do not.

Nice, Well all that memory is going to good use then, Can you not use a server and use the memory from there?

Like people who use Animations that need stacks of server's to render graphics like... I don't know... A film like Toy Story 3 or Wall-E? which need TBTBTB of RAM?

I don't know what the hell I'm talking about now haha! Can't you link your main computer to a server that will process/render the image? Because the server can hold more memory than a personal use computer?

He'd need a server farm, and I don't see your logic behind "server has more RAM". If anything, you'd need fully-buffered DIMMs in a real server which would be ludicrously more expensive.

Additionally, he'd need to buy another computer to use as the server. Why not just buy more ram? lol
