Ps3 3.55 cfw

Hey there OCN, I'm here to extol the virtues of George Hotz's newest project: PS3 CFW.

EDIT: Removed to prevent flamewar.

Mods, please close this thread if you find it against the ToS, and I apologize. I will accept any sort of reprimand or warnings or whatnot that you choose to give me. Similarly, if individuals make comments regarding to piracy, please delete those comments rather than ruin the discussion for the rest of us.

Now to officially begin:

We have a 3.55CFW. It's very simple to install, it takes two clicks, copying to a flash drive, and a manual system update. The files can be found here. All that is required is that you have a usb flash drive formatted in FAT32, create a filesystem on it that mirrors this:
X:/PS3/Update (where X is the letter of your removable drive), then drop the *.pup file into the update directory.

Power on your PS3 without the flash drive in, inset the flash drive, navigate to system update and do it from your removable drive.

**Note: This works only on 3.55 ofw, so you have to update to that in order to do it. You could possible brick your system if you are not on 3.55 OFW**

Once you tell it to update, it runs through a standard update dialog with a very tongue-in-cheek EULA, and the PS3 will begin to beep. 8 beeps = success 3 beeps = failure.

The only difference you will see is that there will now be an "Install .pkg file" option under the game heading. The firmware number remains the same. As of the time of writing, you still have PSN access. You can go back to stock by installing the 3.55 OFW.

What can we do with this? We can in stall .pkg files that have been signed with geohot's installer. There are just a few things out there right now that have been, but the PS3 homebrew scene is only 4 months old, and the signing tools haven't even been out for 48 hours at the time of writing.

We have some FTP access programs and some file managers, as well as some unmentionable software.

We are working on OtherOS support, with one of the grand goals (since the hypervisor has been compromised) being a working XBMC on the PS3.

The process seems to be foolproof and definitely worth it if only for the FTP support. Let me tell you, it really sucks to have your hard drive fail and lose ALL your saves.

XBMC on the PS3 would be awesome. With the signing and all hopefully content will come out faster than other consoles.

Yes...This is what I am really waiting for. If we can get it, I'll definitely be buying a second PS3 with a bad bluray drive in order to be an XBMC box and throw a big HDD on it.

Just an excuse to legitimize piracy.

Ok, so if I own a game, and create a backup of it, for my personal use and keep my game in my disc case, it's piracy? Grow up, just because the only way you can see a use for this is piracy doesn't mean that the rest of us only see it that way. Small children destroy discs. I ended up enabling backup on my family's wii because my sister continually destroyed the discs. They now buy games, rip them to the HDD, then put the games in a safe place. They still purchase the games, but they also keep them protected rather than allow them to be rendered useless by a scratch on the relatively fragile media.

Don't give your sister discs?

Hey quick question, how do u plan on making backup of ps3 games with a broken blu-ray drive on the ps3. From what I have read you need the ps3 to properly rip the game files on to the harddrive. I am not sure if the blu-ray drive in a pc can rip the game files.

PS:
People need to stop beating around the bush, and admit that backup support if just for piracy, no one is backing up there games so they don't scratch. If you little brother or sister are destroying the games cds, some one needs a beating.

Bluray drive will create your backups just fine. If it is an issue, I can create the backups on my PS3 then use FTP to transfer them to him, but if IIRC, we can use his bluray drive to take care of the backup.

And Yes, this is exactly what I did with backup support. My 6 year old sister was mishandling discs so I put backup support on their system so as to negate the destroyed disc issue. People forget, game consoles are toys. They have been toys since the 80s, it's just that until relatively recently, games were distributed via cartridges, which are much much more durable than your standard disc. It's a toy that has a fragile part, remove the fragile part, and the toy is much more durable. That's what was done, and I would do it again. Is it illegal, no. Is it what you would typically hear of someone using backup support for? Probably not, but pretending that their aren't legitimate uses for backup support is naive.

In order to stave off a flame war, I have removed all references to LEGAL backups and LEGAL roms from the CFW discussion.

In other news AsbestOS is going to be awesome.

Some back them up on a hard drive for convenience so they don't have to carry all their games around all the time, they can just click and play. Would be like putting all your luggage in one suitcase.

Games load faster from HDD than optical drive as well. Let's end this discussion here though. I would rather not a flame war or a mod called to the party.

Just to clarify, end the ROM/backup discussion. Continue with the CFW predictions or wishlists by all means.
