SLI using one 16x and a 8x expansion slot.

Long story short, I have two EVGA GTX 460 SC EE, now I dont have a huge issue with the teps on these, just on some demanding games with everything cranked up the top one does get hotter due to the fact of there being no room between them what so ever.

Now my question is how much peformance would I lose if I put one of these on a 8x to allow more air flow between them and ofcourse would it be a noticeable difference? if thats the case then I will live with it but I would like to get the temps down espically with my case having good airflow aswell.

Like 1-3% if I recall from Anandtech. So if you get 60 fps you'll lose 0.6 fps. Most likely less on mid ranged cards like GTX 460s.

I actually just read an article about this. They tested with GTX480's in 16x/16x and 16x/8x and 8x/8x, depending on the game the difference ranged from minimal to nothing.

No, this is most likely spec from your board requiring you to use certain slots for SLI.

^This.

To be more closer to your spec, below is a graph for GTX480 SLI for 1920x1200. The % performance loss is 2%.

As GTX480 SLI is more powerful than your GTX460 SLI and 1920x1200 is also more demanding than your 1080p, the expected performance loss should be max at 2%.

As to your problem of the 2nd card not recognized in the bottom PCIex8 slot, I suggest you try a single card installed at that slot and see if everything is ok. I assume you have done the obvious like cleaning all dust, if any, out of the slot...etc And I suppose you are using the same bridge (long enough?) which has been working ok.

If not, I suggest you flashing your motherboard to the latest BIOS (at least to FB which ''enchance PCIex16/x8 compatibility'') if you are still using the FA BIOS.

If even this does not work, then that slot is likely faulty. RMA it.

Do these rules apply to dual gpu cards too? Or does a card like GTX 295 need to be x16/x16?
