1156 upgrade to i5 760? Wait? Win 7 OEM rules...

After reading all the new cpu stuff I came to the conclusion that to upgrade socket again would be $250-$300 minimum, assuming my DDR1600 would work on new board. So looking at choices on 1156 I only see the 760 ($169) as an option, since the 870 still runs $230 and that's too close to the price of changing whole platform to go that route.

So questions: Is 3.5ghz on air, stock volts fairly common on the i5 760?
Does anyone know timeline for 1156 obsolescence? If I could pick up the 760 for less I'd wait a bit.

Finally, if one upgrades to 1155 with Win 7 OEM would this require a repurchase of the OS? Or just a reregistration?

$170 for the i5-760 is probably the best price you'll ever see on it.

Strictly speaking, if you adhere to the letter of the OEM license, a motherboard upgrade would require a new Windows 7 license. That said, you could probably still re-activate with your old key. MS is actually pretty lax when it comes to activation. Be advised, just because they allowed you to re-activate doesn't mean they won't sue you if they find out.

1. i5 750/760s get 3.5 on stock volts usually, mine got to 3.7 before a bump was needed.
2. $169 is pretty good, but with SB out now, used ones should be going for sub $150 soon, and sales should start in a month or so.
3. Windows won't complain about activation as long as you don't have the same key on 2 computers. Even if it doesn't work, calling microsoft would fix that problem.
Hope that helps, any other questions just ask.

Thanks for good info. I think I'll wait a bit because I'm only doing one upgrade for a while and I might do video card, just waiting to see if 560gtx shakes things up. I'll definitely consider the 760 if I can get clocks similar to what I have on my dualie.
