AM2 or AM2+ extremely exciting socket question...

Thread Starter
Just kidding.

I have an MVA-Vm motherboard that came with an Athelon 64 X2 2.2 Ghz CPU. I'd like to upgrade the CPU so I'm looking at either a 6400+ 3.2 Ghz Athelon 64 X2, or a Phenom X3 2.1 Ghz.

I am avoiding anything faster as my motherboard supports only AM2 and AM2+. Yeah, yeah I can flash my BIOS to 5001 and run the AM3 CPU but I can't take advantage of the full features with my motherboard. (besides which - the only advantage to AM3 is DDR3 right? Am I right?

Also, can I "plug and play" the X3 if my motherboard supports AM2+? Or do I have to update the BIOS to get it to work correctly?

what is wrong with running an AM3 chip on am2+. I am running a 955 on an AM2+ board.

just go for the fastest chip inside your budget.
if you want a quad but dont' want to spend too much get an athlon II x4 chip.

Good chip for less then 100 dollars.

I'm pretty sure the power phase on that (really old) board is too weak to support a 125W CPU.
