Need a laptop for Starcraft 2

Thread Starter
A friend of mine is looking to spend about 900 dollars on a new laptop. We play a lot of starcraft 2 and he's been using my old desktop to play for a while now, but he's ready for his own. I know that sc2 is very CPU intensive so he should probably go with an i5, but I wasn't sure what to tell him as far as the gpu goes. The one he found on newegg has a 5650 in it. Sc2 isn't the only game he plays either; he's been playing a lot of fear lately, and we tend to play killing floor and borderlands too.

This is the laptop he found, and it looks decent to me, but I don't know anything about acer laptops. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

look at my sig it plays sc2 on med settings. Believe me when I say this, a 5650 will be lacking. I found some benchmarks awhile back of a 5730 and a 330m which are suppose to be competing gpu's and nvidia blows ati out of the water. I haven't look in a while but I believe you can find 330m laptops sub 1000

Are you sure the 330m is that much better? I used the website that's in the sticky for this section of the forums and found a way to compare a lot of the different mobile gpus.

I narrowed it down to compare the 5650 and the 330m and they're very close in starcraft 2, while the results for fear 2 highly favored the 5650.

Note the Nvidea 330m is a lower tier card but it performs better than ati 5650 for sc2

I have this laptop. Runs SC2 like a champ with high settings, 1600x900 resolution. Very few, if any, hiccups during regular gameplay, and the only time I've seen FPS drop below 20 is during Desert Strike final battles.

Don't get this laptop, though, as it's an older model and you can get better for the price. Just keep the specs in mind when you're shopping around.

Well, after explaining some things to him, he's decided to spend a little more money and get a laptop with the gtx460m in it. Would an i5 460m at all bottleneck the gpu?

This is the one we're leaning towards now:

Edit: Also, any experience with Toshiba laptops in general?

2ndEdit: Ok so I've found an Asus laptop that's more money (than he wants to spend) but it has an i7 in it, 1080p monitor, 8gb ram, etc. I also tend to trust Asus more, as I've had more experience with them, but I don't really know anything about Toshiba's laptops. Any thoughts?

I have a 9800GTS mobile with P8400 cpu with 4GB ram in my gateway FX P-7805u laptop and I've been playing Starcraft 2 fine. I just ordered 8gb of ram for it was dirt cheap $96 for OCZ ddr3 1333 dual channel memory is too good to pass up. I'll let you know if it runs any smoother with the added 4gb but honestly it runs fine for me now with default installation settings.

Because he can't use a desktop where he's located or his current situation makes a desktop impractical? That's only reason I own one.
