I'm now running 2 x 1TB f3's, and preparing to boot win 7 64 bit ultimate on the array.

Should be quite a bit better then my current disk. Picked these up for about $50 (x2) shopping for deals. If you can use the space i would recommend that route. Otherwise a pair of 640 blacks should get the job done until your ready to make the jump to SSD's.

If i were you i would sell the velociraptor and pick up a small SSD + another 640gb black.

I've just realised that mean time between failure doesn't really make much sense.

So apparently they set up a certain amount of hard drives and ran them until they failed, then recorded the time each one had been running before it failed. Once they had all failed, they added up all of the times and divided them by the amount of hard drives they'd tested. And the answer they got was 140 years. So it's safe to assume that one of the drives used for calculating the average was probably running for 150 years before it failed

That's how you calculate mean, unless I'm missing something

I guess what they really mean is "estimated" MTBF

No.

They do MTBF by running (say) 1,500 drives for 2,000 hours. That gives a total run time of 3,000,000 hrs. Assuming 2 drives failed during the 2,000 hrs (3 months), that would give an MTBF of 1.5 million hours.
