which cpu?

Thread Starter
Ok so I was planning on doing this build and realized. The CPU is only a dual core. I've ordered everything but the CPU so far. Heres what I got.

P7p55d-e pro motherboard

4gb mushkin blackline memory

Hyper 212+ CPU cooler

650 corsair power supply

Gtx260 core 216 gpu. (Hand me down from friend)

The processor I was planning on ordering Friday is the I5 650 heard its a easy overclock and so forth. I guess my question is should I be going for a quad core instead and if so which one. I was hoping to stay around the two hundred dollar range , will splurge if I have too.. and would like to Overclock to 4ghz.
would there be any benefit right now on getting a quad core over this dual core. please tell. thanks guys.
RecommendAtions on different cpu's are welcome

Do you already have that mobo? If not, go with Sandy Bridge (P67 Motherboard + Intel Core i5-2500K). Should get to 4.4GHz easy on air.

It's kinda looking like my options are I5 650/750/760 or maybe something in the I7 range. But prices just climb at that point. Any recommendations between the three I5's

Either one 750 or 760 will take you to 4GHz but 760 has a higher CPU multiplier so 4GHz would be easier..

Ci5 650 is a good cpu (for gaming especially) and hits freqs over 4GHz but in multithreaded apps falls behind a native quad core CPU like 750..

CHEERS..

My vote's on the i5-760. We actually have games, etc that can take advantage of 4 cores now.

Thanks for all the responses guys added some rep. I'm still kinda stuck between the I5 650 or the I5 760. I mean what are the pros and cons between the two yes one is quad core and the other is dual core. But where will I see the surplus from one or the other.

Get the 760 and future-proof yourself till Ivy Bridge or much later (or AMD equivalents).

Quad Core:

- Built on 45nm process.
- Is a 95W chip.
- Doesn't have IGP.
- Has lower clock speed.
- Has more cores.

Dual Core:

- Has hyperthreading but only two cores.
- Is 65W
- Is 32 nm
- Has IGP
- Has higher absolute clock
