The thing to remember is we can't wait for devices to reach 10Gb/s capabilities first. If you look at pci-e, usb and sata revision history you'll see that they were generally released before any consumer devices could max out the previous generation's bandwidth.

Although I agree it's hard to justify those kinds of speeds now, "If you build it, they will come".
