2900$ Gaming Build Needs HDD Storage

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I got a Crucial C300 SSD 128GB and I need some storage to go with it. Currently I own 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 640GBs. I have formatted them about 5 times and figure I might be losing a bit of performance since I have had them so long.

I don't want to put everything on my SSD just so it runs faster so I would like some very good performing HDDs for storage. I do not need anything large capacity wise currently I am only using about 100GB of my 1.2TB Raid0 configuration.

I was thinking 2 of these in Raid0 but open to suggestions on better/faster drives.

I have heard nothing but good things about Samsung F3/F4 and mine has worked fine for as long as I have had it. Supposedly they get pretty good results in RAID0.

There was a thread back in September or October about the F4s and comparisons to F3s. I wouldn't see a reason not to go for them except for maybe a larger amount of storage. Having large drives that aren't full means you aren't moving all around the platter which can help with speed too. Plus, then you have it if you need it.

Would a Raid0 config with these be my best best? On sale ATM for 50$

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=52888&vpn=WD6402AAEX&

I read something about platter sizes causing bad performance compared to newer drives. I would like to keep this system I am on now and give it to my brother.

I am very happy with my caviar black 640s and I want 2 more just worried that they won't perform as well due to platter sizes or something

So 2 of those in Raid0 would be fast drives for my SSD ?

I just posted a thread in this subforum with a pair of RE4s (basically enterprise versions of caviar blacks). you can see my read/write speeds. I think they're pretty darned good.

I tried all the major brands on my last build. The F3/F4s are very fast. What I didn't like about them is I have a very quite case and these drives when they spin up make a vibration noise every second or so that drove me crazy. It's very slight noise, but when it was quite in the house, the noise was too much for me. I ended up with two Western Digital RE4 500GB drives for RAID0. Just as fast then the Samsung, slightly better access time and made for RAID.

Yes those would work great. The black 640's are fast as hell. Put 2-3 in raid 0 and you'll have plenty of speed for CHEAP. If you are wanting all out performance you could go SSD.
