so how does a DVD RW works now?

is there any sort of difference from being able to erase and rewrite on a DVD?

I always thought the data was never erased but overwritten on dvds, the laser destroys the data..like physically burning it away

The recording layer in DVD RW is a special phase change metal alloy. The alloy can be switched back and forth between a crystalline phase and an amorphous phase, changing the reflectivity, depending on the power of the laser beam. Data can thus be written, erased and re-written.

We can always observe a circumstance and shape it to our needs, but to understand how and why the circumstance operates is another level completely. Look at something as "simple" as gravity, we still have not completely figured out how it works.
