I've been using Debian since 2002, if you need any help I do know the system pretty well. You could have fixed the Grub problem with built in editing (I'm guessing).

As for Grub Error 17, it isn't root=*, it shouldn't be any ways. Here is the first entry in my Grub.cfg, I'm going to explain why it isn't root=<device> so that you both might learn something about grub structure.

The bold says it all, this is when you declare the root drive for grub. The italic is for Grub passing variables to the linux kernel. If that is wrong you get the problem of the kernel loading but the root device being unable to be mounted. This is why it is placed after the linux kernel, it's for all options being passed to the linux kernel. That is why you have the ro, quiet, and other flags like splash.

Despite my unknowledge of Slackware I have an extremely good knowledge of general linux and how it works. That's how it has been from the beginning. You always pass kernel variables after you declare the kernel image, so root=<device> is always a kernel variable. Whether it is by UUID or by device path, it is NEVER related to a grub error.

[edit] Ops, it's always after you pass the vmlinuz*, my bad. Although I don't think that's true in all cases either as I think some do it directly after the linux kernel. It's been a while since I've used a grub that didn't have the vmlinuz so I'm not exactly sure.
