My First Raid0 (w/ HDTune benchies!!!!)

I meant to do this a few years ago, but life got in the way. And sure, it's not as cutting edge as it was when I initially planned it, but darnit, I wanted to RAID some HDD's and darnit, I was gonna do it.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to Google the answers to all my questions and sort out how to do it. It took a LOT of flopping around in the BIOS and countless attempts at loading Win7 before I got it all down. Truth be told, it took about 8 hours. LOL. But when I do it again, it'll be a LOT faster, that's for sure!

To my RAID0-newb eye, it looks like the speeds are very good. The 2 RE4's cost me about $110 for the pair, so it was cheaper than RAIDing SSD's, but yeah, I know people are getting higher speeds with them., but maybe my write speeds are better?

My expectation is that I will keep this RAIDed HDD system for 2 years and store everything I do on the RAIDED drives, while still doing frequent backups. Realistically, after 2 years, whatever you did is pretty much out of date. So why plan for or expect more longevity than that?

The system has....
AMD 7750BE (stock),
8GB DDR2 800 RAM,
Biostar TA790GX 128M (onboard RAID controller).

Two questions...

1. How's this look for 2x WD500GB RE4's in RAID 0?
2. Why does my computer only show 500GB of storage rather than 500GB + 500GB? = 1TB?

Yes, it's set up as MBR and it was set up in the BIOS. From what I've seen of other single-HDD benchies, my numbers seems about right.. or even a little better than expected. Still, the questions remain about the total size of the array and whether this is in the ballpark.

I don't know why, but when I was loading the OS it showed as a single 500GB.. but it was definitely set up in RAID0 with the driver prior to installing the OS.

If those are both 500GB drives, then you short stroked them by accident it looks like. Not a huge deal, just means better performance. That's actually pretty darn good performance honestly for those drives. 220 MB/s read and 9.x ms latency is very good for mechanical drives.

My 1TB's short stroked to 100GB get 259MB/s and 8.0ms latency for comparison.

I have the exact same setup. Mine read 1000gb.

When I shrt stroked mine to 500GB I got this:
