If you don't rely on sound while gaming, I'd go with some more musically oriented headphones, like the MS1s.

Actually, the thing is that I want to BECOME more sound oriented while gaming, partially why I am firing up this conundrum in the first place, but thank you for your advice.

You can mod the 555's to sound exactly like 595's. That's what really made the deal for me. I find my 555's sound amazing after the mod. 555's are also made to be able to replace an individual part, like for example the headphone cord.

Pick up a sound card with a built in headphone AMP. World of difference over onboard for the headphones. Louder, clearer and gives a better sense of direction of where the sound is coming from. I just have the cheap Asus Xonar DG that someone here recomended and works great other than it's PCI and I'm running out of room . Thinking about springing for the Xonar Essence STX just because it is X1. I don't have the great cans yet but even with my cheap HD201's it made a big difference.

AD700.

The overall build quality of the 5xx Sennheiser cans are flawed and eventually prone to cracking after heavy use. The Audio Technica AD700 also offers a noticeably larger sound stage paired with a decent card (Basic X-fi, Xonar DG,D1,DX etc). This is my opinion after using both cans for quite some time.
