I've only done a handful. The last one was 1k and I charged 10% but he gave me an extra 4%. I'm gonna likely stick with 15%

EDIT: I haven't set a fixed charge for builds but I usually do 10-15% of cost of parts.
Looks like I'm moving down to Miami...

How about making yourself available for remote sessions? Some people are not comfortable with strangers in their homes.

I've made 2 custom builds for my brother's friend and I've charged him $50. They builds were around 500 so I guess 10% it's fine to start? Now he asked me to build him another one...

As for equipment I suggest at least the following

An eletric air duster
Usb filled with diagnostic programs
Extra components (to test failure by process of elimination)
Maybe a volt meter
Screws/screwdrivers/led flashlight etc...
A uniform with a nifty nametag!

U start running into problems if its an OS corruption though, and they don't have a recovery partition/cd... u basically have to say they're screwed and have to order a new OS or ask them to contact their computer manufacturer

With faulty parts you can probably give them an option to let you do all the hardwork of finding replacements + labor of course

In the case of corrupted OS you can also charge a premium for data recovery... I made good commision off of that at work (found some interesting stuff off customer HDD's in the process)... but, you know, that's all private

He supplied all the parts and he paid you 50$ labor to throw it together? That's not bad at all.

For custom builds, I price them purely out of judgement. I let them know up front that their setup is really high end so I charge a little more for the work. If it's a much simpler, lower end budget build I am more generous and work with them to lower the cost as much as possible, maybe $50 profit on top of a $400 build.

I had bookmarked some warranty labels a few months back. Here you go.

Alright, I just filed as an LLC. "Jared's Computer Shop LLC" ... Simplest way to get across what I do I figured, and couldn't come up with any cool names that would convey what I do easily to the average consumer.

I have a question regarding laptop repair... I've never really messed with laptops besides the software side which is exactly like desktops, but should I even take on hardware issues with laptops? Is it even worth it?
