Hey guys new here and this is my first post so hello.

I am wanting to OC my new build I have never OC but have done some reading on what all I need and I already have all the programs I will need to do everything I'm still just a little hesitant so I am hoping you guys will give me the cojones to actualey do it.

Here is a bit of system info for you

955 Black Ed.
Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x 4GB)
Gigabyte 890-FX UD5
XFX HD 6850
Zalman CNPS9900MAX
Rosewill 1000W

At idle I sit around 31°C haven't really checked under a load but with the amount of case cooling and the arctic silver paste I used I think I should be fine.

I have done some research and I'm pretty sure the 955 can reach 4.0 not sure but if you guys can lead me into the right direction to where I can find info about the RAM and CPU and there max's that would be great. Also any tips or suggestions would be amazing to again thanks ahead of time.

Sorry I should of mentioned.

I don’t plan on OCing via software ill do it in the BIOS the programs I was talking about would be.

For the CPU
CPU-Z
Core Temp
HWMonitor
LinX

For the GPU
GPU tool
GPU-Z
MSI Afterburner

I have already played with the GPU a bit but I plan on setting it back to stock before I start to OC the CPU and redo the GPU OC once I have a stable CPU OC.

And I just edited my system specs in my profile.

What clockspeed you get depends on what revision your 955 is (C2 or C3, check using CPU-Z). If you have a C3 you have a better chance of hitting 4GHz, but there's no guarantee you will be able to.

I would also go ahead and find out what your load temperatures are with prime95 or LinX, since u have it already (remember, anything above 62C you run the risk of shortening the lifespan of your CPU). As long as your load temperatures are below 62C you can keep increasing voltage, though I wouldn't go much over 1.5V.

Okay, well it's hard to tell you what the "max" is for a certain cpu since every chip is different and will have a different overclock than even a chip of the same exact kind.

What I would do is go for a modest overclock to start...and then work your way up testing it quickly for stability (no need to be 24hrs prime95 stable at this point...just a quick test will do) then once you have reached what seems to be a max for you (whether it be due to temperatures or just stability) i would run prime95 or linx for longer to ensure stability. Different people have different definitions of "stable" some people do 10 minutes of prime95 some do 2 days...it's really up to you.

CPU-Z says the revision is RB-C3. I am really hoping to hit around 4.0 but if not that’s ok. I am running a quick LinX last time it ran in about 10 mins but I didn’t check anything ill have to actually play with the program and figure out how to use it a bit better.

And I do plan on starting small then stepping it up. Any suggestions on voltages and ram? I really haven't seen much out there. and I am willing to get SS's if anyone needs some.

You've got a nice 955 C3 rev. chip there. That will help your cause to 4GHz. But the problem is that your cooling may not cut it. 3.8GHz might be a little more realistic for you.

Screenshots would be nice. Let's see your Memory/SPD tab in CPU-Z, along with the CPU screenshot tab and if you can, a picture of your BIOS.

Really anything for me is amazing since this will be my first OC. The temps ran about 37-38 on load and about 31 idle that’s with LinX doing 20 runs.

Here are some SS's

Turn off your Cool&Quiet for starters, and also turn your host clock to manual though leave it at 200, and start upping the multiplier, testing with prime95 for 15 min inbetween, keep eye on temps, up it until it gives you problems, then report your temps, if they are under 50-55 then up the CPU VID a notch and retest, report back
