Upgrade Cpu kit (HP) *Universal?

Hi eveyone,

Just wondering if upgrade cpu kits (with cpu included) from namely HP; can these cpu's be installed in any motherboard, or are they exclusively only for pre-built workstations?

I ask because I can get some kickass 6 core intel cpu's at 500 euro below retail price......I sent this question to the retail shop (local) and they don't know lol. If anyone can I answer this question I will rep

Thanks.

oh ok, their sockets are diff from standard cpus. So the answer would be that they can only go into computers that are already using xeons to begin with or computers with 1366 socket i7s

The socket is 1366, meaning that it has the potential to fit in a singel x58 or dual socket xeon motherboard. I am asking because in Dell, Hp workstations etc; in some of these workstations only exclusive parts can be used to upgrade parts (ram being an exception I think), but this may have changed.

Edit: I Know that these cpu's will fit in any 1366 motherboard, but would they work? My worry is, that these cpu's only work with a certain motherboard/workstation.

For example, the HP BL460c G7 L5640 Kit, a cpu upgrade kit designed for the HP BL460c unit, which included a heatsing (2U rackmount compatible I believe) and the cpu I can get my hands on this puppy for 340 euro....A blessing considering I am just about to buy parts for a rackmount renderfarm! I can't stop but think that they have made a mistake in pricing because this particular kit I cannot find cheaper than 1,300 euro online......And the cpu goes for aound 700-800 euro online as well, a hexacore @ 2.8ghz with HT and dual QPI and it only spits out 60 watt.

example: *so clearly the kit comes with cpu as well ^.^

as long as the server(xenon) cpu is the same socket type(ex 1336>1336) as a desktop motherboard you should have no problem with compatibility.
