Purchase another 5870 for Crossfire or wait for 6990?

Newegg has my exact 5870 1GB for $210 after coupon code and MIR so I was debating whether I should pick that up instead of waiting for the HD 6990 to come out (who knows when that will be...) and paying the $100-$200 premium for it over the additional 5870.

For the most part I only play Bad Company 2 consistently and at my Eyefinity resolution (4320x900, similar to 2560x1600) I can play at Max Settings (HBAO off) and 2x AA / 16x AF with 40-50 FPS and dips into the low 30's. I would like to get a consistent 60 FPS with minimums of no lower than 40 FPS. From what I've read, a 5870 crossfire setup could do this.

So now, I can't decide if I should wait for some HD 6990 news to arrive and for it to finally release, which could be a month or two from now for all we know, or just purchase the 5870 1GB now for less but sacrifice performance and just be done with it now.

Also, has anyone had any 5870 crossfire microstutter problems in Bad Company 2 with the latest drivers?

Another option would be to stay put, noone knows if the 6990 will even be coming out at all. There is a lot speculation and the HD7xxx series is coming out this summer so there may be better options then.

Its hard to say though, how important is the upgrade to you? Is it worth throwing out the money now or can you wait?

Where is this information on the HD 7xxx series? I have not seen any release date information for them at all. Summer seems sort of soon since the HD 69xx series literally just released last month. I would not expect the HD 7xxx series until fall this year at the very earliest.

The HD 6990 has been announced by AMD, but literally has fallen off the grid for the past month or so. So basically my only two options right now are buy another 5870 for crossfire right now for less money but also less performance or wait a month, 2, maybe more for the HD 6990 which will cost more but give more performance.

In all honesty, since I mostly just play Bad Company 2 (and Battlefield 3 once it comes out), I think a 5870 Crossfire set-up should be enough. The only thing that worries me right now is that I'll suffer the dreaded microstutter (which is rumored to be more prevalent on the HD 5xxx series than the HD 6xxx series) which would completely kill my experience and I would highly regret buying the additional 5870.

For the micro stutter use the right drivers

10.5a have worked wonders for me as where 10.10e was smooth but with less performance and 10.5 stuttered me to death

5970 + 5850 trifire

We've known for a while that the 6xxx cards were just a stopgap. I'm pretty sure that 7xxx is what they've really been focusing on.

My understanding of it all:

Before the 68xx series was released there was a reference in the Linux drivers to the "Northern Island" and "Southern Island" graphics cards.

Originally the "Northern Island" cards were going to be released as 32nm process by Global Foundries, but due to problems with the 32nm process the planned 32nm "Northern Island" chips were ditched and instead a stopgap solution to modify the 57xx and 58xx 40nm chips was put into action. But this then put the "southern Island" development on hold.

The stopgap 40nm chips were then used for the the 68xx and 69xx series - and the "Southern Island" cards were rescheduled for the 28nm process.

The rumours are they will be the new HD 7xxx series on 28nm process - but the actual card names have not been confirmed.

BUT, even though the actual card names have not been confirmed by AMD (ie. hd 7xxx series - at least I have not found them state it anywhere ), the 28nm gpu chips are definitely happening, as Global Foundries and AMD have already confirmed that commercial 28nm chips will be available in the second half of 2011.

So after the release of the 6990 in a couple months, you can expect to hear more about the new 28nm chips and the GPUs they are planned to be used with

Micro-stutter? Lol what? Another internet myth that only the ''golden-eyes'' can ''see''. 99% of the time what people ''think'' is micro-stuttering is something else, like HDD loading gigantic files, etc. I've seen people wrote on the net that they have ''micro-stuttering'', but they are using a single graphic card. Sigh.

I'm in Tri-Fire (5970+5870) and have never seen any micro-stuttering. I play BBC2 alot with everything maxed-out at 2560X1600, and it's rock-stable, rock-fluid. I have over 75 games in my Steam account, and have never seen micro-stuttering.

I also have 6970 in another computer at home, and waiting for the 6990 to go Tri-Fire again.

Forget the golden-eyes saying that yes they see micro-stuttering because because... ''they can see it while you can't because they have super-duper golden-eyes and you don't''.

There is alot more problems in our computers today (like people stil using those crazy slow HDD) that are alot more important then the pseudo-mythical micro-stuttering, blown-out of proportion by the internet parrots and apologists.
