Build is Complete! Now I need help with Overclocking this 980x beast :)

Thread Starter

Hi guys!

I finished my build !!

Specs are as follows:

Intel 980x, 12GB Viper Patriot, EVGA SLI3, Corsair H70, Corsair 850aw, SLI GTX 470's, Corsair 600t, SSD boot drive, 1TB black

I have never overclocked before but have read up on it a lot.. From my reading, I have gathered that the safest/easiest way to overclock this 980x is by the multiplier.. In this video, it seems like you just adjust the multiplier and the cpu vcore voltage and that's it?

I am just shooting for ~4.0GHz so it can last longer.. My computer runs 24/7 for video encoding/editing. I also game on it as well.

Is that video correct? All I need to adjust is the vcore and multiplier? How do I measure stability? What temperatures do I consistently want in Prime 95 with all 12 threads @ 100%? Do I need to turn off the turbo boost function?

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys! Thanks so much in advance!

I don't like that Linus guy, his reviews are very biased to what NCIX is trying to get rid of rather than actual performance.

temps in the 90s is to high anything below that and u should be good for 24/7 use. just run prime for 24 hours if u want to make sure its perfectly stable

So the way he overclocked it is not the correct way?

Is the way above the method to overclocking this chip? Do I need to turn Turbo Boost Off?

Try by the video, it's not the best method because the other voltages take a little tweaking too. try using intelburn test or prime 95 to test stability. turn off turbo so your always running at 4 ghz. I'm pretty sure for i7's its best to stay under 90c so try to never go over that

Also, for the length of your stability testing don't over do it and leave it on for a full 24hrs or more because if you last 3 or 4 hours your probably stable

I'd say never go over 80 celcius for long periods of time. tj max is 101 celcius, but don't go near that.

You might want to disable all the auto-voltage features and the green power features so that you don't over/under power your rig.

Use Core Temp and have it on while doing Prime95 runs, let it run for at least 8 hours. I've had OC's that gave errors after ~16 hours so you are never too sure.

For 4GHz on a 980EX I'd say stay around 70-75 celcius depending on your cooler, I've got a NH-D14 on my i7-970 and I peek at 71 celcius with fans lowered to ~900RPM.

4.0Ghz on a 980x is the lowest I've seen, but it's what I would do if I had one I recommend running Prime95 for a full 24 hours to be extremely sure (I've ran into errors at around ~14 hours), unless your impatient to try all that power, just leaving it on overnight will do. Shoot for below 70C if you can for 24/7.

Any one else that has overclocked a 980x by multiplier possibly with an EVGA board?

Doing the same test in summer is totally different from winter!
